Love Island viewers left scratching their heads over voting twist

Love Island returned to our screens with a twist on Monday with viewers at home allowed to decide who coupled up with who.

"I've got some news, none of you guys will be coupling up with each other," host Maya Jama revealed to the contestants. "That decision has already been made by the public. Are you ready to find out who the public have coupled you up with? Let's go!"

Despite this welcome switch-up, many fans were left frustrated over the fact they hadn't been notified beforehand, meaning they'd ultimately missed out on the opportunity to have their say.

"Who's this public and when did we vote? #LoveIsland", one fan asked while another added: "Were the public even aware they had the vote?? #LoveIsland."

"Am I the only one who wasn't aware of the public vote? #LoveIsland" questioned a different account while another added: "WHEN DID THIS PUBLIC VOTE HAPPEN #LoveIsland."

However, despite the confusion, fans were in fact given the chance to vote on the app for which contestants they wanted to see paired up.

Among the ten Islanders looking for love, aesthetics practitioner Jess Harding was matched with business development executive George Fensom.

Estate agent Catherine Agbaje was paired with business owner Andre Furtado while musical theatre performer Molly Marsh was coupled with gas engineer Mitchel Taylor.

Communications manager Mehdi Edno will get to know beautician Ruchee Gurung and semi-professional footballer Tyrique Hyde and model Ella Thomas completed the line-up.

However, while some couples flourished, others were left feeling unsatisfied with their chosen pairings.

And later in the show, host Maya returned to drop a bombshell (quite literally) on the villa as she gathered the Islanders around the fire pit.

Maya, 28, asked the villa: "Are you happy or could you be happier? I have the ultimate dare for you…", she then dared those not happy in their couples to step foward.

To which Ruchee and Jess stepped forward, leaving their partners looking awkward over the "brutal" twist.

Things then took another dramatic turn as Maya introduced a new bombshell, personal trainer and basket ball player Zachariah Noble, 25, from London, leaving the villa floored.

She added: "In 24 hours, the power will be in your hands… you'll get to steal anyone of these girls in front of you – not just the girls who have stepped forward.

"That will leave one boy single and vulnerable… I will see you all very soon, bye!"

Love Island resumes on ITV2 tonight at 9pm.
