Love Island viewers urge show bosses to bring back lie detector segment

Love Island viewers have urged ITV bosses to "bring back the lie detector" on the show after a series of instalments have seen the islanders seemingly twisting the truth over and over again.

Things came to a head in Movie Night when Olivia Hawkins, who has now been dumped with Maxwell Samuda in the latest episode, was exposed for talking behind some of the islanders' backs.

As clips were shown of the former islander tattling away to Maxwell about who she thought was compatible and who would go the distance, the rest of villa seemed surprised to learn the truth.

But as the latest drama unfolded around Australian islander Jessie Wynter, whose true intentions were questioned by Olivia, Lana and Tanya, there seemed to be a lot of missing pieces in the story.

Will Young demanded to know why people were saying things behind Jessie's back and calling her "fake" but lying to her face, and fans think the situation in the villa is ripe for a return to the show's iconic lie detector challenge.

"Bring this back rn #loveisland," one person begged, alongside an image of Doctor Alex George hooked up to the machine.

Another demanded: "Bring the lie detector test for friendships atp too #loveisland."

"BRING BACK THE LIE DETECTOR IT’S TIME FOR SEASON 2 LEVEL CHAOS #loveIsland," a third exclaimed.

While a fourth viewer simply said: "They need to bring the lie detector back #loveIsland."

The last time the piece of equipment was used was in 2018, when Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham won the series.

Dani was left upset after watching her then-boyfriend "fail" a question about whether he would be "tempted" by other girls once they left the villa.

But the challenge was only scrapped from the show following the tragic death of Jeremy Kyle Show contestant Steven Dymond, who died by suicide at the age of 62 after failing a polygraph test on the show.

The controversial series was then cancelled days later.

It was claimed at the time that while the lie detector episode is everyone's favourite, the arguments caused between couples weren't worth the potential effect on islanders' mental health.

The latest instalment has provided enough of its own drama however, as not only were Olivia and Maxwell dumped from the islander after a day partying away at the beach club.

What's more, after having seconds to accept their exit from the show just two weeks before the final, Olivia and Maxwell were informed they had to decide one other couple to dump from the island themselves.

As Maya Jama's shocking arrival in South Africa left the islanders rocked once more, the dumped couple will have to choose between Claudia Fogarty and Keanan Brand, Casey O'Gorman and Rosie Seabrook, and Shaq Muhammad and Tanya Manhenga.

Love Island continues every night at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX
