Lil Nas X won’t be penning a diss track about MTV anytime soon.
The Montero singer is among the most highly decorated artists up for a 2022 MTV Video Music Award, the nominees for which were announced Tuesday.
With seven nods, including Video and Artist of the Year, Lil Nas X is tied for first opposite collaborator Jack Harlow and Kendrick Lamar. It’s certainly a far cry from this year’s BET Award nominations, whose decision to fully snub Lil Nas X just last month inspired the rapper to release the single “Late to da Party.”
Speaking of snubs, one name we expected to see more of in this list was Adele, whose chart-topping fourth studio album 30 earned her only a pair of nominations: Song of the Year (“Easy on Me”) and Best Art Direction (“Oh My God”). When looking at Adele’s history with the VMAs — she earned 10 nominations for 25 back in 2016, tying her with Beyoncé — it’s hard not to wonder if she was negatively impacted by her eleventh-hour decision to postpone her Las Vegas residency earlier this year, for which she finally announced new dates this week.
The 2022 MTV VMAs will air live from New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Sunday, Aug. 28 (8/7c).
