Abby Sciuto (played by Pauley Perrette) said farewell to the likes of Gibbs (Mark Harmon), McGee (Sean Murray) and the rest of the NCIS team back at the end of the CBS drama’s 15th season. Rumours and calls for a potential comeback still live on among the NCIS fandom, although Perrette herself appeared to quash these rumours in 2020 by confirming her retirement from acting. Nevertheless, fans are allowed to dream and following a recent nod from Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) in the show’s 20th season, Abby’s popularity is proven to be as high as ever.
References about Abby have been a rarity since she departed NCIS over four years but season 20 has delivered not one, but two so far.
Just six episodes in, fans had already been treated to a cryptic tribute thanks to the reintroduction of Abby’s favourite drink, Caf-Pow.
But in the sixth episode, Palmer addressed Abby by name, sparking further speculation she could return and bringing the fan-favourite right back into the forefront of viewers’ minds.
Season 20’s episode six, The Good Fighter, focused predominantly on Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) tackling an undercover mission but the moment still caught fans’ eyes.
With Kasie out of the lab, Palmer stepped into the lab where she and Abby had worked in order to process evidence related to the case the team were working on.
But clearly not as clued up as Abby or his current NCIS colleague, Palmer reached for the hand-written Abby’s Lab for Dummies manual.
This nod alone would have been enough to spark excitement but NCIS bosses dropped another sweet nod to ensure the presence of Abby was well and truly felt.
As Palmer flicked through the manual, the score switched to a techno/punk soundtrack which was synonymous with the scenes Abby used to appear in.
However, Palmer clearly doesn’t have the same knack Abby had as he soon ends up sending the lab’s computers into somewhat of a meltdown.
But in the end, as is typical on NCIS, everything ended up fine with Kasie emerging as the hero from her rare involvement in the field.
Kasie even got her hands dirty in a fistfight with an armed assailant – again, another throwback to Abby’s own physical altercation back in season three’s Bloodbath.
Inevitably, fans shared their excitement at so much Abby content online, with Twitter user @THEMaggiewarren commenting: “No but imagine Abby and Kasie working together and being besties!!! #NCIS.”

Elsewhere, Katy said: “Loved the reference back to Abby! Long love Abby’s lab for dummies (featuring McGeek on the cover!)”
And Kevin N weighed in: “Jimmy reading Abby’s lab for dummies shows how we all miss Abby in the lab #NCIS.”
Meanwhile, @elongatedbean added: “Abby’s Lab for Dummies, that’s a throwback #NCIS #TheGoodFighter.”
While @littleriolu expressed: “ABBY’S LAB FOR DUMMIES???? IT HAS BEEN SO LONG #NCIS.”
And Bud Kinches added to the hype: “Did I just hear Abby’s name? It’s been so long #NCIS.”
Sadly, this isn’t concrete evidence that Abby could be making her way back to NCIS anytime soon.
And Perrette is yet to directly address the reference towards her character publicly.
She did take to Twitter on Monday, however, to pay tribute to Will and Grace star Leslie Jordan following his death at the age of 67.
NCIS season 20 returns on November 14 on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
