Netflix angers customers as they start sending emails charging for password sharing

Netflix users have been left angered after emails informing them they will need to pay extra for people outside of their households to use their account.

After months of rumours that a charge would be levied against accounts being shared, the streaming giant finally seems to be taking action.

The email states: "Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with – your household."

it adds that TV and film fans who want to share their account with friends or relatives who live in other locations will need to pay an extra £4.99 a month to do so.

The update comes after the streaming service, which has lost subscribers amid stiffer competition and rising inflation, began a crackdown on account sharing last year in countries including Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.

On Tuesday, Netflix posted a statement online which read: "Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United Kingdom.

"A Netflix account is for use by one household.

"Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are – at home, on the go, on holiday – and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.

"We recognise that our members have many entertainment choices.

It continued: "It’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV programmes – so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you’re watching with, there’s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix."

The email sent to customers provided ways they could share their Netflix accounts, including paying another user for the price of £4.99 extra per month.

Another way is to "transfer a profile" to a new membership entirely or for people outside of their household to have a "new membership that they pay for".

Netflix has changed its tune since joking on Twitter that "Love is sharing a password" as it was quickly expanding in the UK in 2017.

Customers have taken to Twitter to express their anger at the email, with one user tweeting: "New Netflix updates up. Lot of people upset. Myself included."

Another quipped: "I’m worried that the new password crackdown will make it harder for the working class to Netflix and chill."

"Please give me a moment while I think about how best to word Netflix’s update on sharing between households," said another customer.

Netflix fans are currently enjoying the latest season of Selling Sunset which returned earlier this month for series six. Customers also anticipating the release of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

The sci-fi show has become a flagship programme for the streaming service and filming on the final season is believe to be taking place this year. A release date is yet to be confirmed.
