Netflix in lawsuit over drug cartel show as woman claims she inspired character

A Mexican woman who once had alleged links to drug trafficking is apparently suing Netflix over a series that she says is based on her and her life.

Sandra Avila Beltran – who is known as The Queen of the Pacific – is also reportedly taking action against TV channel Telemundo over Queen Of The South.

According to reports, she is alleging that she inspired the character Teresa Mendoza in drug cartel show La Reina Del Sur (Queen Of The South) and is seeking 40% of the royalties.

The 61-year-old's uncle is Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, from the Guadalajara drug cartel. And some years back she was connected to a suspected Colombian drug dealer.

She was first dubbed The Queen of the Pacific after it was alleged that she set up a fleet of tuna boats that could carry 10 tons of cocaine each up Mexico's Pacific coast and into America.

Sandra did spend some time in jail after facing charges of money laundering.

However, her lawyer Israel Isaac Razo Reyes was quoted as telling Milenio Television that she has not been convicted as a drug trafficker, so linking her to it has an impact on her image.

He pointed out that it was "very difficult" for her.

Sandra is well known in Mexico and the US and has started to gain more attention elsewhere after posting videos to TikTok.

She uploaded a video last month that showed her looking glamorous in a leopard print dressing gown and sunglasses.

Another showed her out with a friend.

People who saw the clips all said the same thing – that they couldn't believe how young she looked for her age.

"I can't believe she is 61, born in 1960," said one.

"Doesn't look like it had to Google her to see she was 61 lol," said another.

Daily Star has contacted Netflix for comment.
