Paralympic champion swimmer Ellie Simmonds got off to a decent start on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, landing in seventh on the leaderboard out of 15 famous faces alongside Nikita Kuzmin. The pair’s Cha Cha Cha proved they had what it took to impress on the dance floor, earning them a score of 26 from the judges. However, week two will introduce the public vote and if Nikita’s latest update on BBC Two’s It Takes Two is anything to go by, they could be in danger.
Nikita admitted that he and Ellie are struggling to gel and put together their routine for their waltz.
Speaking from the rehearsal studio on Wednesday’s It Takes Two, he told viewers: “At the moment we’re having difficulties with the waltz.”
A clip of Ellie in training then played which showed her frustrations growing as she snapped: “Why am I not getting it today?”
Explaining why the two are having problems with the routine, Nikita continued: “Ellie cannot rely on my leading because I’m not touching her with my body.
“So she has to remember every step and her stride is different.
“We have to adapt every single step,” the Ukrainian-born dancer revealed as a montage of their time in training played.
Once more, fans were given a behind-the-scenes peek at Ellie’s angst as she unenthusiastically said: “I need to try that again.”
However, despite Nikita’s admission, Ellie remained in high spirits as she had the final word of the VT.
Speaking to the camera, Ellie triumphantly declared: “On Saturday, me and the waltz, we’re gonna be friends!”
Fans will have to wait until Saturday evening to see if the two have been able to put their “difficulties” aside in order to land a higher spot on the leaderboard.
However, they have some fierce competition for the top spot which is currently occupied by Will Mellor and Countryfile’s Hamza Yassin.
Both celebrities racked up a score of 34 apiece from Anton du Beke, Craig Revel Harwood, Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas.

However, Ellie and Nikita are a lot further up the week one leaderboard than former Arsenal centre-back Tony Adams who props up the table alongside pro Katya Jones with just 15 points.
The Strictly pair can also take encouragement from the latest odds from bookmakers for the first elimination of the series.
Bet365, SkyBet and William Hill all have former football Tony earmarked as the favourite to face the chop after he underwhelmed the judges in week one.
Tony is currently 11/8 with Bet365, 11/10 with SkyBet and 5/4 with William Hill to end up going home.
The first Strictly exit isn’t a sealed deal by any means, however, as Loose Women’s Kaye Adams could also face the chop.
Kaye is currently at 13/8 to be voted off by Bet365, while SkyBet and William Hill place her at 3/2 and 15/8 respectively.
Ellie, however, is a rank outsider to be booted off soon, with Bet365 placing odds as high of 66/1 for her to leave first.
It Takes Two airs weekdays at 6:30pm on BBC Two.
All odds are correct as of Wednesday, September 28 at 8:30pm.
