The sixth series of Outlander was much shorter than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic but fans were thrilled they still got their fill of Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Reflecting on filming the episodes, Caitriona explained she was left anxious because protocols meant she wasn’t able to hang out with her cast mates as much as usual.
Speaking in an Instagram Live with co-star Sam, Caitriona explained: “My pit last season, I don’t know. I think we managed to make the most of it but I think I had a lot of anxiety.
“Especially with us filming in sort of Covid and it was that thing of, it made it hard.
“We couldn’t hang out the same way we would normally do. We didn’t have the same social element to the season we would normally have.
“I think that kind of hard.”
Sam nodded: “I would definitely agree. This strangely felt like the hardest season because of all the factors, we were shooting in the winter and the Covid protocols and also yourself.
“It must have been so difficult for you, I think everyone struggled.
He continued: “It’s one of the most condensed, packed seasons. I know there are less episodes but there is so much to unpack and I’m really proud of it.
“I think it’s one of our strongest and we had some great characters come back.
“We had Bonnie Prince Charlie and we had that great moment where we saw Flora McDonald.
“We got to see all these amazing moments. We got to see Aunt Jocasta. So many great actors that came back.”
Elsewhere, actor Sam has spoken about what he misses most about the cast when he isn’t filming the Scottish drama.
“I’ll miss the camaraderie, the people, the routine,” he revealed.
“The routine is pretty tough, pretty full on. But there’s something wonderful about it, going to work every day, you know you all are going to be f**ked but the end.
“It’s hard work, it’s full on, but you’re all in it together.”
He added to Square Mile: “So I guess that camaraderie and being around people you enjoy being around.”
It’s been eight years since Outlander first appeared on screens and nine since Caitriona was cast.
She posted on Twitter: “Wow. I can’t believe it has been nine years. I guess time flies when you’re having fun, getting to live your dream and spend it with an amazing group of people.
“As always thank you @Writer_DG for creating this incomparable character who has given me so much … and….
“Thanks @TallShipProds @RonDMoore @Outlander_STARZ @SPTV for taking a chance on this newbie all those years ago.”
“What an amazing ride it has and continues to be …and of course … thanks to all the amazing fans who keep wanting more, so we get to continue this joyride!!! #Claire.”
