Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) made it perfectly clear to Bernie Winters (Jane Hazlegrove) that if she wants to support him through his MND diagnosis in Coronation Street, then they have to do things his way.
This happened during a meeting with an MND specialist, who told Paul that he more than likely wouldn’t be on a trial for a treatment as he doesn’t have the gene required, let alone not having any history of the illness in his family.
Bernie – who is still struggling to accept her son’s situation – said that if going private was needed, then that is what they’ll do, determined to find some sort of option that means Paul lives longer than expected.
As she continues to try and keep her mind busy, Bernie recently decided to apply for Paul’s Personal Independence Payment on his behalf, which means he’ll get help from the government with things like paying bills due to the fact he cannot continue his usual builder job.

In upcoming episodes though, when Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) and Paul return from their holiday, Paul finds a letter that confirms someone has been looking into PIP.
Feeling bad, Chesney (Sam Aston) tells Paul that it was Bernie.
Confronting his mum, Paul tells Bernie that he finds her fundraising attempts humiliating, but will Paul see that his mum was just trying to help?
Later in the week, Bernie is given a chance to make amends when she helps Paul, who stumbles while getting off a bus.
She wonders if she’d be able to try out her crystal therapy, and Paul reluctantly agrees.
As Bernie finds her own way of coping with Paul’s illness, will she find comfort in the crystal therapy?
