As Piers opened up his show he said it was a "sad day" and recalled that the Queen had been on the throne throughout his entire life, adding that he's "not a spring chicken".

He said: "She's been a constant rock of duty, strength resilience. Comfort when we've needed it, celebration when we've wanted it."

He praised her for not being political and sitting above politics and social media and never giving interviews because she "didn't see the point".

Piers added: "She never chased celebrity and she was the biggest celebrity of them all. Somebody veered around the world among presidents, world leaders, entertainers, and of course ordinary people.

"People from all walks of life. Rich, poor, black, white. It didn't matter who you were or where you were from she treated you with the same respect she gave everyone else."

The TV journalist described her as a "beloved public figure" across the world and said she was a "unique person and wonderful human".

Piers recalled meeting Her Majesty as he reflected on the three times they interacted and said he "remembers every moment" of the meetings.

He wrapped up his tribute by adding: "She was the biggest star of the Royal Family. The biggest star of them all, and tonight, that star has left the stage. But what a stage she left – and what a legacy she leaves."

He shared his condolences with the Royal Family and said he hoped the Queen thoroughly enjoyed the show which was put on for her to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee over the summer.

The Queen celebrated 70 years on the throne in June as the longest reigning monarch in Britain as millions of revellers joined in on the festivities for the milestone day.
