Richard Madeley reveals hes deaf in one ear after contracting new strain of Covid

Richard Madeley has revealed he’s been left with hearing issues after contracting Covid.

The Good Morning Britain presenter contracted a strain of Covid which has left him with ongoing complications, after he suffered a perforated eardrum.

The star – who recently spoke out on a conversation he’d had with Phillip Schofield following his This Morning exit – said the complication makes it difficult to hear busy conversations.

Saying that the hearing problem “feels like I’ve got a cork in my right lughole”, he added that he can actually hear better during his time on the GMB set as he can turn up his earpiece.

He explained: “Funnily enough, doing GMB, which I was a bit worried about, gives me better hearing because I wear my studio earpiece in that ear and I can wind up the volume to the max: it’s a bit like having a hearing aid I suppose.”

He added to The Sun: “Susanna [Reid] sits on my left and I can hear fine on that side. But having conversations in a busy pub or office is tricky; lots of different voices and loud background noise makes it really hard to work out what someone is saying to me.”

Luckily, the change is not likely to be permanent, as the presenter added he hoped his eardrum would heal “in a few weeks”.

Also speaking to the publication, Richard recently revealed he had spoken to former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield, after he left the show earlier this year after admitting an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a younger colleague.

Phillip had been a regular presenter on the show for over 20 years and it is still being decided who will replace him following his departure.

Richard, meanwhile, was a presenter on This Morning between 1988 and 2001 and returned for a shorter stint between 2019 and 2020.

He revealed he had spoken to Phillip after he left the show and called the outcome “pretty savage”.

He said: “I feel very sorry for Phillip – it seemed a pretty savage outcome after 21 years [in the job]”.

“‘I took a paternal interest in it – I kept in touch, told him to take it easy and that it’ll be all right. He agreed. All things pass in the end.”

Richard is currently a regular presenter on Good Morning Britain, but ruled out a return to the This Morning sofa, saying: "I enjoyed it but wouldn’t go back".
