Ryan Gosling has finally teased some details on his portrayal of Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend, in the upcoming live-action flick with Margot Robbie as the iconic doll.
In a comment sure to delight fans, who melted the internet when first-look images of him as Ken were released in June, showing him in an abs-bearing unbuttoned denim jacket and personalised underwear, the star also said he had ‘Ken-enrgy’.
While promoting new Netflix movie The Gray Man, in which he co-stars with Chris Evans, the 41-year-old actor said he was ‘proud’ to be insulted in that film through a co-incidental comparison with Ken.
‘I have that Ken-ergy. Which he could feel, obviously, when he commented on it. I still feel like the Ken-ergy is alive,’ he proclaimed.
When pushed further on what exactly ‘Ken-ergy’ means, La La Land star Ryan kept it vague but offered: ‘You’ve got a Ken in your life. And you know that that Ken has … Ken-ergy.’
He then finally gave us a little something, with a surprising revelation about his version of the doll in the movie.
‘Ken’s got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house,’ he told ET Online. He’s going through some stuff.’
The glorious photo releases from the currently LA-based film shoot so far haven’t hinted at any issues with Ken, although we have seen him in delightful matching outfits with Barbie, from Western style to hot neon lycra as they rollerblade together.
The star also joked to Variety in a separate interview that he felt ‘seen’ as Ken, so fond is he of his doll counterpart’s wardrobe.
‘I felt like I was seeing myself. I felt seen,’ he recalled. ‘I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this.’
‘Gotta do it for the Kens. Nobody plays with the Kens’, he added.
The has starred in a host of top-billed films including The Notebook, Drive and La La Land, which landed him his Oscar nomination for best actor – but Ken might be his biggest role to date, judging by keen interest in the film.
The new Barbie film is a joint project between Warner Bros and the doll’s manufacturer Mattel.
Acclaimed actress and director Greta, 37, co-wrote the script with her partner Noah Baumbach, and the rest of the cast includes Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa, Marvel superhero Simu Liu and more.
She was nominated for the best director and best original screenplay Oscars for 2017’s coming-of-age drama Lady Bird, and scored a nod for best adapted screenplay with 2019’s Little Women.
Barbie is due to hit cinemas on July 21, 2023.
