Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the former athlete discussed his various TV appearances, such as his time on Strictly Come Dancing and his Celebrity MasterChef win in 2019. Ever the positive thinker, Greg detailed how, although he felt he was “c**p” on Strictly, he loved the experience for the friendships he made and the opportunity to take part. However, he admitted he prefers to chat about Celebrity MasterChef, which he went on to win after impressing the judges each week. Reminiscing on his experience, he talked about the two judges and confessed Gregg probably thought he was being “attacked” during an awkward blunder.

“I prefer Masterchef to Strictly!” Greg joked as he relayed both experiences.

When asked if John and Gregg were scary, he admitted: “Yeah, they’re very scary at first – you’re genuinely terrified!”

He continued: “Because the big thing as well is you don’t want to poison anybody!

“You don’t want to be the one that killed John Torode with a dodgy pie. So you are very conscious that they have to eat your food.

“And you want to make it as good as you possibly can anyway, and honestly, it’s nice to receive nice compliments, right?

“So I wanted the food to be good in order for somebody say, ‘Oh, you’ve done a really good job’ because I’ve worked very hard at it.

“But no, they’re really nice. And yeah, I still speak to John sometimes on social media and stuff as well and when I post cooking-based stuff he will put a comment or send me a quick message which is really nice as well.

“He’s just a good bloke but they both were, and that was really nice as well.

“They do try and put you at ease at times as well I think, as well as doing their TV bit and adding a little bit of suspense.”

Detailing an awkward moment, he added: “But I did also drop a chocolate hotpot fresh out of the oven on Gregg.

“It actually smashed all over the floor, which was shown on the show.

“So yeah, I feel like he felt like I was going to attack him at first!”

Despite not getting quite as far on Strictly, Greg came in ninth place with his partner, Natalie Lowe.

He explained how he loved the experience and even opened up about the “best judge”.

“Actually, Craig [Revel Horwood] to be honest,” he admitted.

“And what was really interesting – I feel bad for contestants of the last I think two years maybe – but when I was still on there, you would all go to a bar afterwards.

“And you could just hang out and laugh and your family and friends would come behind.

“And actually, Craig was the one judge out of all of them who spent the most amount of time with everybody.

“We’d have lovely chats. Of course, he’s pantomime when he’s doing his judging but he’s such a genuinely lovely man.

“So you take what he says on the show with a pinch of salt.”

MasterChef is available to watch on BBC iPlayer, while Strictly Come Dancing series 20 continues on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
