Former EastEnders star Nigel Harman will join Strictly Come Dancing
Nigel Harman admitted he has made a “conscious effort” to “remove” himself from his iconic EastEnders role.
Speaking on Loose Women, the future Strictly Come Dancing star reflected on his time on the BBC soap.
Panelist Jane Moore commented: “One of the things about being in a soap that a lot of actors say is it’s really difficult to not feel stereotyped, you know, as a soap actor.
“So you made a very conscious effort – you’ve done so much varied stuff.
“Was that like a willful decision to kind of remove you from EastEnders?”

“I think yeah,” Nigel replied during the 2022 interview. “Yeah, it was a conscious decision to do as many different things as I can and as an actor, I want to trial different stuff.
“So yeah, that was a big part of it. And this isn’t anything to do with EastEnders, it’s to do with when I was in Mamma Mia, or anything I’ve done.
“I’ve always pretty much left so I could go and do something else and I think that’s important.”

Nigel has starred in an array of very different roles on both the stage and screen.
While he is currently known for his role in Casualty, he built up a strong following during his time on EastEnders from 2003 to 2006 as heartthrob Dennis Rickman.
Dennis arrived on the Square 20 years ago as the long-lost son of legendary Den Watts (Leslie Grantham), and while Den made history with his iconic return from the dead in the same year, fans are still hoping his son could do the same.
Speaking to Inside Soap about the role, he added: “I think that’s why he’s resonated for so long. I wasn’t aware [how popular Dennis was] at the time.
“People still come up to me 20 years later [and that’s when] I’ve noticed the impact that Dennis has had.”
Strictly Come Dancing is set to return to BBC One on September 16.
