Obsession
THRILLER Available from Thursday
Be warned: things are about to get steamy. When brilliant and respected surgeon William (Richard Armitage) first meets his grown-up son’s new girlfriend Anna (Charlie Murphy), this happily married man is hit by a bolt from the blue and falls instantly and powerfully in lust with her. Cue an obsessive, passionate and very risky affair, which takes a sinister turn when William receives an anonymous text telling him to stop what he’s up to, or face his and Anna’s secret being revealed. Inevitably, the headlines will be about Obsession’s full-on sex scenes and nudity – and yes, there’s plenty of it. But beyond that, and despite one or two clunky erotic thriller cliches, this four-parter – an adaptation of Josephine Hart’s book Damage – is dripping with tension and gripping psychological thrills.
The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die
FILM Available from Friday
Christmas is coming early for fans of The Last Kingdom. While last year’s fifth season was its final full series, the Saxons-versus-Vikings historical epic comes to a much more exciting and spectacular end with this feature-length one-off. When King Edward dies, it looks as if England’s fragile peace is about to be shattered. Keen to support one of the two potential heirs – Aethelstan – Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) rides to his assistance. But an unexpected betrayal forces Uhtred to choose between his king and his homeland. Meanwhile, the arrival of Danish warrior-king Anlaf adds more fuel to the fire. Expect a spectacular, bloody, mud-splattered fight fest.

He hopes it will be a quick mission, but before long, Mike finds himself sucked into an increasingly dangerous and – at times – daft journey that uncovers long-buried family secrets. Will he ever escape from Florida? Also starring Anthony LaPaglia as Mike’s dad Sonny, it looks set to be a smart and darkly funny crime caper.

The Last Thing He Told Me
THRILLER Available from Friday
Life couldn’t be much better for Hannah (Jennifer Garner). She has a brilliant career as a respected sculptor, lives in a beautiful waterside home and her husband, Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), is successful, handsome and devoted to her. Okay, yes, Bailey (Angourie Rice), Owen’s 16-year-old daughter from another relationship, is still a little cold towards her, but Hannah’s working on it. However, this happy life is ripped away one day when Owen sets off for work but doesn’t return. His phone’s not answering, no one’s seen him – the only thing Hannah has as a clue is a hastily written note that reads: ‘Protect her’. Can Hannah form an unlikely alliance with Bailey and uncover what’s happened to Owen? With shades of Gone Girl and Fleishman Is In Trouble – although without the latter show’s humour – this is an intriguing and glossy seven-part thriller with plenty to keep you hooked.

Jane
FAMILY Available from Friday
Budding environmentalists assemble. New 10-part series Jane follows the adventures of nine-year-old Jane Garcia (Ava Louise Murchison), a little girl with a big imagination and even bigger love for endangered animals. Inspired by the work of renowned primatologist and anthropologist Dr Jane Goodall, the series finds young Jane on imagined epic quests to save endangered creatures, helped along the way by her best friends David and Greybeard, her trusty chimpanzee. It’s educational, no doubt – not least in the way that it identifies the different animals badly in need of protection – but always makes sure to transmit its messages in a very entertaining way.
Sago Mini Friends
KIDS Available from Friday
Meet Harvey, a friendly, floppy-eared pooch who enjoys nothing better than getting into scrapes with his buddies Jinja the cat, Jack the rabbit and Robin the bird. If you’ve already tuned in to the first season of this cute animation, you’ll know that it’s crammed with adorable characters, memorable songs, delightful humour and relatable adventures. Now it’s back with a sparkling new one-off episode, in which Harvey finds an ingenious way to turn an old lunch box into a treasure chest filled with exciting items for his friends. Those notoriously tough-to-please pre-schoolers are sure to love it.

However, the tough new regime quickly ruffles feathers: could Glenn be facing mutiny? Single Drunk Female
COMEDY Available from Wednesday
We’re living in a golden age for comedy-dramas about complicated, multi-layered, flawed yet fascinating female characters. From Fleabag to I Will Destroy You, Back To Life to Hacks, there’s an ever-growing number of great shows to discover. Right there in the mix is Single Drunk Female, which is back this week for its second season. If you didn’t catch the first series, it follows the struggles of Samantha Fink (Sofia Black-D’Elia), a twentysomething alcoholic, whose life unravels, forcing her to move home with her mum Carol (Ally Sheedy) and to get sober. If that sounds rather heavy, rest-assured the show is laced with plenty of world-weary, black comedy. Expect more of the same as Sam returns, a year-and-a-half sober and, thanks to a new job and a potential love interest, feeling like things are on the up. However, life, it seems, has other ideas…

Waco: A British Tragedy
DOCUSERIES Available from Thursday
The story of what happened at Waco in 1993, when David Koresh’s Branch Davidian cult held out against the FBI and military for 51 days before a fire brought events to a violent end, has been told many times. What’s less well known, perhaps, is quite how many of Koresh’s followers were British. With the 30th anniversary of the end of stand-off looming, this two-part documentary uses unseen archive footage and exclusive interviews to explore the story of that British contingent, revealing their experiences both during the siege and its terrifying, tragic conclusion.

The Idaho College Murders
DOCUMENTARY Available from Saturday
Last November, the town of Moscow in Idaho, USA, was left shocked and terrified when four students were stabbed to death in the middle of the night in their shared accommodation. Within weeks, police had arrested the person they believe responsible: criminology Ph.D. student Bryan Kohberger, who will stand trial in June. This documentary promises an exclusive and thorough examination of the horrific events of that night, and the police investigation that followed. Speaking to other students and nearby residents, sifting through the evidence and charting the movements of Kohberger in the days before and after the crime, the film attempts to understand the motives behind these horrendous and brutal killings.
PARAMOUNT+
Freed To Kill
DOCUSERIES Available from Tuesday
This disturbing five-part true-life documentary takes us back to Texas in 1992, telling the agonising story of a clutch of killings that should have been prevented. US Marshal Parnell McNamara and District Attorney Bill Johnson are investigating the mysterious abduction and murder of 22-year-old Melissa Northrup, when they discover a car close to the crime scene, which is registered to a man called Kenneth Allen McDuff. McDuff was a notorious serial killer who had been sentenced to death in the 60s for murdering three teenagers, but had had his death sentence overturned and was released on parole in 1989 – allowing him to kill again. Gruesome.
Yonder
SCI-FI Available from Tuesday
It’s the near-future and not long after his wife, Yi-hoo (Han Ji-min), dies following an illness, Jae-hyun (Shin Ha-kyun) is shocked to receive a message from her, inviting him to a special space called Yonder. This is a place that allows the dead to upload memories from their life – giving Jae-hyun the chance to be reunited with Yi-hoo. But how long will they be able to stay together in Yonder? Another highly bingeable show from South Korea, Yonder’s blend of sci-fi and romantic drama provides a touching, sweet and funny take on the lasting power of love.

People are only just realising why postal workers write ‘P’ on letters

Thrust into an unfamiliar city, living alongside other young people from all over Europe, the pair soon find that they know less about each other than they thought. This eight-part coming-of-age drama is the creation of Cédric Klapisch, who directed French phenomenon Call My Agent, and while it’s not as charming and funny as that show, it shares its pace and stylish look. So, if you fancy hanging out with some effortlessly cool, if sometimes troubled European twentysomethings, tuck into Greek Salad. In French and English, with subtitles.
