Hulu’s bleak dystopian drama will soon be heading into its fifth season, with production wrapping in Toronto earlier this year. However, the streamer has now confirmed just one more season of The Handmaid’s Tale will be produced to conclude the story of Handmaid and freedom fighter June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss).
Streaming service Hulu has confirmed The Handmaid’s Tale will come to an end after two more seasons.
A sixth season has been confirmed this week, after which the acclaimed drama based on the bestselling novel by Margaret Atwood will come to an end.
It will be followed by an adaptation of the author’s follow-up novel, The Testaments, which picks up the story years after the events of the original modern classic.
Creator Bruce Miller said in a statement: “It has been a true honour to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
“We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run
“And we are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”
When season five premieres this week, June will face dire consequences after the murder of her former oppressor, Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).
She’ll be facing off against his widow, Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski), and will be forced to decide where she stands in the fight against Gilead.
Meanwhile, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) , Nick (Max Minghella) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) are working behind the scenes to rebuild Gilead and gain power.
However, Lawrence and Nick could be planning to take on the regime from the inside, while June’s husband Luke (O.T. Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) lead the resistance in Canada.
Main cast members Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, and McKenna Grace will also all be returning for season five.
Hulu president Craig Erwich said: “Five years ago, almost to the day, The Handmaid’s Tale made history when it became the first show to win an Emmy for a streaming service.”

“In the time since it has been a privilege and pleasure to work with some of the finest creative talent in our industry on this show.
“A distinct and exceptional group of people who continue to produce the highest quality television that has made and continues to make significant cultural impact.
“Bruce, Warren, Lizzie, and the entire team at MGM have been amazing partners, and we hope fans enjoy these last two seasons.”
Thankfully, the story is far from over as Bruce is already working on bringing Margaret’s Booker Prize-winning follow-up, The Testaments, to the screen.
Part prequel and part sequel, the TV adaptation is expected to bring a brand new cast of talent to the world of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Season five of the dystopian drama will premiere next Wednesday, and a recent trailer has teased an epic showdown between June and Serena.
A release date for season six has yet to be announced, though production is expected to start next year.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 premieres Wednesday, September 14 on Hulu in the US. Seasons 1-4 are available to stream on All4 in the UK.
