The Last of Us: Get to know Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey
The Last Of Us star Bella Ramsey has been announced to lead the cast in a brand new period drama. Monstrous Beauty will follow the story of Barbara Field, who is born into the era of King Charles II (played by The Crown’s Dominic West).
Barbara is born with a rare genetic condition that means her body is entirely covered in hair. With her family in poverty, she is offered the opportunity to be educated and to join the court of the King as a “Natural Wonder”.
Soon, she is rubbing shoulders with other “Natural Wonders” – those who, like Barbara, have looks considered out of the ordinary – who have been given position in society.
But Barbara has dreams beyond being known for what she looks like, wanting to become a playwright.
Luckily, she has help, and finds friends as she sets out to make her dreams a reality.
She teams up with one of the King’s mistresses Nell Gwyn (Ruth Negga) – who wants to teach the King a lesson in appreciating women beyond their looks.
Under the guidance of famed playwright Aphra Behn (Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw) she sets out to find her own voice in the patriarchal world of the 17th century.
Things get even more complicated for Barbara when she hires Vale, a newcomer with no acting talent and the object of her own desires.
The film will combine fictional characters with real-life historical elements, and will written and directed by Atonement star Romola Garai.
Gabrielle Stewart, head of Hanway Films who are creating the projects, said Monstrous Beauty is a “timeless and entertaining story” that celebrates “identity, power and beauty”.
Production on the movie will begin in September, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
The news comes shortly off the back of the success of The Last Of Us, a post-apocalypic series based on the game of the same name.
Bella starred opposite Pedro Pascal in the series as Ellie, who is fighting to survive in the ever-changing world.

Season two has already been confirmed, with Ramsey set to return to the role for the upcoming story.
Speaking to The Independant, Bella said of season two’s release: “It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.
“So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”
The gap is largely down to the expansive special effects needed to the bring the infected zombie-like world to life.
The 19-year-old star is fast becoming one of the most in-demand British names in Hollywood, kicking off their career at the age of 11 as Lyanna Mormont in Game Of Thrones.
Last year, Bella led the cast of Lena Dunham’s Catherine Called Birdy, and played Jane Grey in TV series Becoming Elizabeth.
Other roles have included Mildred Hubble in a TV adaptation of The Worst Witch.
Monstrous Beauty is yet to be given a release date.
