The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 – Official Trailer
Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel’s (played by Rachel Brosnahan) riveting rise to fame and notoriety in the 1950s-60s stand-up comedy scene has become a roaring success for Prime Video. The three-part premiere has already started the fifth and final outing on a high, and Express.co.uk had the chance to speak to Caroline Aaron about bringing her iconic role as Shirley Maisel to an end.
Aaron revealed the cast of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel were given a magnificent tribute over the New York skyline after completing the final table read.
The TV star revealed she’ll be taking “many things” as memories from the series with her, and fondly recalled her experience working on the final season.
“When we did the last table reading, which is when the whole cast gets together to read the episode out loud,” she explained.
“We were all dispersed because we’re not all in scenes together usually.”
“But when we did the last table read we knew it was the last table read of the series, they had 100s of people there. All the Amazon people and stuff.
“When we were done we went out on this balcony that was off on the side of the soundstage and they shot off fireworks over the East River of New York City.”
Most of the series takes place within the iconic American city as Shirley’s daughter-in-law Midge begins an unlikely career as a stand-up at The Gaslight club.
Following a chance encounter with iconic comic Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby), Midge becomes one of the city’s most controversial stand-up acts and concluded the fourth season as the emcee for a strip club.
“They ended with an ‘MMM’,” Aaron continued. “And believe me, I will never forget that. That was quite a night.”
At the start of season five, Midge faces some tough decisions about her career after the police raid at Wolford’s.
She’s now found her new calling as a writer on The Gordon Ford Show, but is once again challenged by the comedy world’s male-dominated environment.
Meanwhile, Shirley threatened to divorce her husband Moishe (Kevin Pollak) when he refused to retire after his health scare.

A devastating revelation from their son Joel (Michael Zegen) and his fiancée Mei (Stephanie Hsu) makes them reconsider their separation, but there will be more drama for the family to come over the next few weeks.
As Mrs Maisel heads towards what will undoubtedly be an emotional series finale, Aaron revealed she initially hoped the series could have continued much longer were it not for the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I think they had completely different plans in terms of storytelling pre-pandemic,” she revealed.
“As a matter of fact, our executive producer at the end of season three went to London to scout locations. She wouldn’t tell us what was going on.”
“But we knew in season four that Midge or maybe the whole gang was going to London or something. And that got scrapped.”
Thankfully, the fifth season has already raised the bar for the series even higher, while some intriguing flash-forwards have given viewers a taste of what’s to come in Midge’s future.
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 5 continues Fridays on Prime Video.
