The Rookie / The Rookie Feds crossover event trailer
The Rookie: Feds was missing from the list of shows confirmed for renewal by ABC this week, leading to concerns from some viewers the series could be cancelled.
Following a popular backdoor pilot during the fourth season of The Rookie last year, the spin-off has received a mixed response from fans for its first full outing.
After airing the season one finale earlier this month, a follow-up season is still in limbo following the latest renewals from ABC.
On Tuesday, the network confirmed sitcoms The Conners and Not Dead Yet were both renewed for the 2023-24 season.
They’ll join a third season of Abbott Elementary and a whole host of unscripted shows, including American Idol, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise and Celebrity Jeopardy! into next year.
A Million Little Things, Big Sky and new shows The Company You Keep and Alaska Daily are confirmed not to be returning.
However, viewers are still waiting on a decision for both The Rookie: Feds as well as the Topher Grace-led sitcom Home Economics returning after the summer.
Disappointing ratings could be a factor, but it could also be contingent on the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike which is expected to affect programming across all American networks next year.
Twitter user @bonlrisch said: “The longer this limbo goes on, the more likely #TheRookieFeds is going to be cancelled.

“It doesn’t bode well that they didn’t announce renewal at the same time as they did OG #TheRookie.”
@NickHackett2 said: “Unfortunately Feds is nowhere near as good as The Rookie.
“I like the show but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s cancelled, but I wouldn’t mind brief appearances in the main show.”
Although worried fan @eebb18 exclaimed: “Nooooo I need both shows!
“What is happening? Stop it with stupid ‘reality’ shows. Give us good sitcoms and series.”
Despite the concerns, ratings for Feds were trending in a more positive direction towards the backend of the first season.
ABC has also seen success with its Grey’s Anatomy offshoot Station 19 after a rough first season, so fans could expect to see Feds getting a second chance over the next few weeks.
The Rookie: Feds airs on ABC in the USA and Sky Witness in the UK.
