The Witcher: Official trailer for Season 3
Warning: The following article contains spoilers for The Witcher season 3.
Now that the second half of season three has aired on Netflix, there were quite a few conclusions in the final episode.
Not only has Henry Cavill appeared in his last scenes as Geralt, making way for Liam Hemsworth to take the reins in future seasons, but one specific death has truly shocked viewers.
After realising that she has been betrayed by her romantic and political partner, Vilgefortz of Roggeveen (Mahesh Jadu), sorceress Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) sees no other choice but to take her own life.
Actress MyAnna has opened up about the fate of her character and whether she could have recovered from the betrayal.
She explained: “I think she feels directly responsible for the death of all these incredible mages and humans.”
MyAnna also revealed that Tissaia was the one to make the choices that “led to this war, to this horrific fallout.”
Tissaia’s “lack of judgement” when it comes to Vilgefortz led to a level of destruction that could have ultimately been avoided.
She continued to Digital Spy: “I think it’s that sad, actually. Not only that but it’s really heartbreaking as well.

“Vilgefortz is somebody that she put so much hope into, and she felt that, together, they could actually change and create this balance within how all these kingdoms will run, and they can finally achieve a certain kind of peace where chaos was respected.”
But this was not the case.
MyAnna also suggested that Vilgefortz is a “sort of sociopath here” as he “was just playing a game the whole time.” And not only that, but playing it really well and enjoying doing so.

Even though viewers didn’t actually see Vilgefortz acting as puppet master in the first few episodes of season three, by episode five, it became clear that he had been working with Nilfgaard to hand down orders to Lydia (Aisha Fabienne Ross) and Rience (Chris Fulton).
As to whether Vilgefortz did have true feelings for Tissaia, Therica Wilson-Read, who plays Sabrina, thinks that “he does respect” Tissaia and her power but this led to “utter betrayal” by him in the end.
Seasons 1, 2 and 3, are now streaming on Netflix. The spin-off, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is also available to stream on Netflix.
