Peter Wright says he’ll ‘stick to the day job’

Peter, 64, worked with the real James Alfred Wight, commonly referred to as James Herriot, and talked about how the Channel 5 series captures the time, location and characters perfectly. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk about the new series of The Yorkshire Vet, which launches on Tuesday, Peter admitted he would like to make a cameo appearance in the period drama All Creatures Great and Small.
Peter recently said an emotional goodbye to Skeldale Veterinary Hospital in Thirsk, where he worked as a vet since his days with Alf Wight.
He now works for Grace Lane surgery in Kirkbymoorside, but reflected on his early days, when he fell in love with veterinary work.
“I’m looking forward to the new series [of All Creatures Great and Small],” he explained.
“I think it’s absolutely fantastic. To me, it brings it home how old I’m getting now!
“But Nick [Nicholas Ralph, who plays James Herriot] and Rachel [Shenton, Helen Alderson] do a brilliant job.
“I think they’re fantastic, I think they portray the characters extremely well.
“They do it so well with the characters that I grew up with – namely Alf Wight and [Donald] Sinclair,” who is depicted in the series as Siegfried Farnon, played by Samuel West.
Talking about a possible guest appearance on the series that reflects his early career experiences, Peter beamed: “I’d love to do that.”
He repeated: “I would absolutely love that. So if someone could put in a word it would be much appreciated!”
Reminiscing about Alf, he admitted: “He didn’t see himself as this famous icon, he saw his job as 90 percent researcher and five percent author.
“And I think he’d be quite bemused by the way it’s [the series] taken off again for the second time.”
He went on to say Alf would be very pleased with All Creatures Great and Small.
James practiced for almost 50 years and is best known for a series of books he wrote about the veterinary practice in the Yorkshire Dales.
Focusing on his own popular show though, Peter teased what can be expected from the new series of The Yorkshire Vet.
He explained how this series will also delve into the vets’ private lives, with his partner Julian Norton celebrating his 50th birthday and later the wedding of Huddersfield-based vet Matt Smith.
Peter has been a firm fixture on the show since it began in 2015, and has confessed several times the show’s success has surprised him.
Last year, he spoke out about his “far more popular” stars of the show.
He explained: “The dogs regularly appear on Ginni’s Instagram account and people pop into the café especially to see them.
“They’re far more popular than me or Julian Norton, the other Yorkshire Vet!”
The Yorkshire Vet series 15 airs on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 5.
