This Morning fans praise ‘brave’ live breast examination to raise cancer awareness

This Morning fans have praised the show for organising a "brave" live on-air breast examination that took place during Monday's episode to raise awareness of cancer and the importance of checking your breasts.

Monday's episode was headed up by Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond, who welcomed interior designer and author Dame Kelly Hoppen, 63, to talk about her cancer diagnosis.

Kelly revealed on Monday that she had ignored eight years of mammogram checkup letters before discovering that she had breast cancer. Thankfully, she's now been given the all-clear.

She admitted that she is "still scared" to check her own breasts, and that she has to ask her partner to do it for her.

A brave volunteer and breast cancer survivor named Liane then came on to the set dressed in a white robe, which she then undid so Dr Saya Kayat could demonstrate how breasts should be checked for any irregularities that could indicate cancer.

This Morning fans rushed to Twitter to praise the show for tackling the subject, as many commended volunteer Liane for taking part.

One person tweeted: "Just want to praise @thismorning “how to check your breasts” segment… it’s something that women aren’t really taught how to do and it’s so important to know how to check properly! Thank you!! #thismorning #howtocheckyourbreasts #cancer."

Another said: "#ThisMorning love that lady having the breast examination brave and beautiful."

A third wrote: "#ThisMorning. Just wanted to say how brave and amazing the lady is to be live on TV to allow the Dr to show us how to check our breast."

"Leanne is incredibly brave to have a breast examination live on morning telly. #ThisMorning," said a fourth.

Kelly Hoppen shared her diagnosis in a newspaper column, as she described ignoring her mammogram invitations as "a foolish thing to do."

"It’s a cautionary tale, a warning to others, not to be too frightened, too harried by the demands of work to go to your appointments,” she said, revealing her mother had a breast cancer scare when she was relatively young.

Kelly credited her personal assistant with ensuring she finally followed through with an appointment in September.

The results eventually found Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) – meaning some cells in the lining of the ducts of the breast tissue had started to turn into cancer cells but had not yet started to spread into the surrounding breast tissue.

“[My doctor] explained that I’d been very fortunate indeed: DCIS is the very mildest form of cancer,” she continued in the Daily Mail.

“It was in two milk ducts and I was booked in to have the cancer cells removed from the ducts — an awful procedure which made me feel very sore.

“I was hugely fortunate. Although I’d neglected my check-ups, I was lucky that my cancer was detected early.

“Had it not been, I might have faced a less happy outcome. Actually, I might not be here writing this cautionary tale now.”

She added there was a 10 to 15% chance the cancer will return, but she vowed never to skip a mammogram again.
