Since welcoming her first child in May last year, Jess Wright has had a tough introduction to motherhood. But with the worst finally behind her, she’s now got her sights on expanding her family and giving son Presley a little brother or sister.
The former TOWIE star, who’s married to businessman William Lee-Kemp, has been candid about her postnatal mental health struggles, heartbreakingly revealing that she felt like she didn’t want to be here at times.
Little Presley suffered from painful reflux and tummy issues, which Jess and her husband thought might be the result of a possible dairy allergy.
Fortunately, the 38-year-old is now feeling positive and in good health, and regularly shares snaps of Disney-loving Presley on her Instagram, referring to him as a “lively toddler”.
Jess, of course, found fame as a TOWIE original cast member in 2010 alongside brother Mark, 36, who’s married to actress Michelle Keegan and who clearly dotes on his little nephew judging by Jess’s social media posts.
Her parents, Carol and Mark, are popular with TOWIE fans too, while Jess also has a younger brother Josh, 34, and younger sister Natalya, 23.
Back in September, Jess, who quit the show in 2016, celebrated her two-year wedding anniversary with William after getting hitched during the pandemic. The date was rescheduled due to various lockdowns, and tragically Jess’s much-loved uncle passed away after contracting Covid.
Here, Jess explains why she’d love the opportunity to say ‘I do’ all over again and opens up about the big changes she has experienced since becoming a mum…
Hi Jess, how is little Presley doing?
He’s really good, thank you. He’s been extremely cheeky recently, and he’s got a great personality. He’s 17 months old now. He’s a funny little thing – he’s brilliant.
How are you coping with motherhood?
It’s not even about coping. It’s about living your life as it is, but with a child in the mix. And when you try and work at the same time, well… being a working mother is extremely hard. It’s all about fitting everything in at once.
Are you and William thinking about having another baby any time soon?
I’ve got three siblings and I feel like Presley should definitely have a sibling. He’s crying out for people to play with, so having a baby might be a lovely idea. I can’t just be a mum of one, so who knows? But the clock is ticking, so I should probably get a move on.
How did pregnancy affect your relationship with your body?
I think we always have our hang-ups, don’t we? But I also think when you’re a mother and you’ve carried a baby, you can appreciate your body more so you’re not as hard on yourself.
I’ve been working out at the gym, but I’m not taking everything for granted. As long as I’m here and healthy, then I don’t care. I’ve got my baby, and that’s what’s important.
You’ve said previously you’d like to get back to your pre-baby dress size. Have you achieved that?
I think so. Although I think my shape has probably changed a bit. Someone told me before I had Presley that your shape changes when you have a baby – and that it never comes back.
Weirdly, I think your shape does slightly change, but in certain areas more than others. For me I think it’s my hips that have changed.
Your dad and brothers fronted a BBC show together where they toured around Britain. Have you had any thoughts on doing one with your mum and sister?
Yes, there’s always talk of it. We’re just rolling through the motions and seeing when it’s the right time. But I think it would be so fun and hilarious. My mum, my sister and I have a very funny dynamic.
Ha! What would the show be about?
Gosh, who knows? There’s a whole story. We’ve got a very complex and hilarious relationship, so I genuinely think we could be doing anything.
Would you ever return to TOWIE?
I don’t know. It was all such a long time ago now.
You’ve talked previously about the stress of planning your wedding during the pandemic and the tragic loss of your uncle. Would you consider renewing your wedding vows to make up for it?
Oh God, give me time! I have said in the past that due to it all getting interrupted with the pandemic and stuff, it was so stressful. So I would love to do another renewal of the vows, but potentially at the five-year mark. So we’ll see how it goes.
Mark and Michelle’s housewarming party in the summer, where Olly Murs performed, looked like fun…
Yes, it was hilarious. They put on such a good performance and spread. It was an extremely hectic day and it took us three days to get over it, but it was amazing, just brilliant!
