Vera star speaks out on ‘errors’ in Brenda Blethyn series

Vera: Shane reveals the truth of what he did to his brother

Mark Edwards (played by Riley Jones) first met DCI Stanhope (played by Brenda Blethyn) in the first series of Vera as a uniformed police officer.

He was was first person on the scene after finding a woman’s body at the side of the road.

However, he quickly impressed the detective and was promoted, and he has remained an integral part of Vera’s team ever since.

Mark is often found in the office doing the background work for a case along with Jac Williams (Ibinabo Jac) and Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison).

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Riley opened up about what it’s like filming alongside leading lady Brenda and how fans often pick up “errors” while watching the ITV series.

The actor admitted viewers are “detectives themselves” as he addressed “missing” a few errors in the show.

“When you get people watching this type of show and enjoying this type of show, they do scrutinise it,” Riley began.

“They do find things [errors] that you miss as a viewer or sometimes you miss in production.”

“You don’t want it to be too distracting but the viewers pick up on it straight away,” he continued.

“But I love that and love how they view the show and they love location spotting as well.”

When asked what happens in between takes, the Mark Edwards star said: “We have a good laugh.

“I don’t think you could do a show like this for 12 years and not have a bit of fun and a laugh between set-ups and in between scenes.

“We come in of the morning, especially in the incident room scenes, we come in and we do approach it seriously.

“We do sit down with the script, with the scenes we are about to do and break it down with the director, the producer and the script supervisor.

“We will chat through it and we’ll make sure everyone knows what’s going on.”

He went on: “That is all very serious and proper and how it should be. And as we’re filming it and we’re feeling more comfortable, then that’s when you can have a bit of a laugh in between takes.

“Like I say, I don’t think you could go for this long without being able to do that.”

Despite having a laugh on set, Riley admitted when filming everyone remains professional and doesn’t break character.

“To be honest, everyone is pretty good,” he explained. “During takes, everyone is on it, it’s when we’re not filming when the cameras are down.

“A three-minute scene in the incident room could take three or four hours to film.”

Vera is available to watch on ITVX and Britbox.
