If you’ve been on Twitter today (August 2), you may have spotted Cake Gate trending and wondered what on earth is going on.
The situation involves an independent bakery and former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley.
It’s certainly surprising news for the middle of the week, so allow us to explain what’s been happening:
Who is Catherine Tyldesley?
Catherine is an actress and model from Manchester. She is best known for playing the role of Eva Price from 2011-2018 in ITV’s Coronation Street.
She has also featured in many other dramas and sitcoms including BBC One’s Scarborough and the BBC show Lilies.
Catherine is in a relationship with Tom Pitfield and welcomed their second child, Iris Ella, in 2022.
They also have a son called Alfie, who was born in 2015.
What is Cake Gate?
Catherine has found herself embroiled in a back and forth over apparent demands for free cake from a small business bakery.
Rebecca Severs, who owns Three Little Birds Bakery in Keighley, West Yorkshire, received an email asking her to make two birthday cakes and over 100 cupcakes in exchange for ‘social media exposure’ from a ‘well-known celebrity’, who has since been confirmed as Corrie’s Catherine.

Rebecca declined the offer and responded via email, writing: ‘I’m so sorry to hear that your client has fallen on such hard times they can’t afford to pay small businesses their products.’
‘Unfortunately as my mortgage provider doesn’t take payment “in the form of promotion on their socials”, and my staff can’t feed their kids with exposure on Instagram, I’ll have to decline your very generous offer.’
The actress was named as the celebrity by Mail Online after another bakery told the publication that they had received the same email.
In a response to so-called ‘cake gate’, Catherine has taken to social media and said the event organisers ‘are an amazing company and they’ve been completely misrepresented in this’, branding the matter ‘utterly bizarre’.
