Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?: Trailer for Agatha Christie series
This month, ITV are bringing Agatha Christie’s classic novel Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? to screens in a new three-part series adapted by Hugh Laurie. Along with creating the drama, Hugh is starring in the show as psychiatrist Dr James Nicholson. Ahead of its debut, actress Lucy Boynton revealed what it’s like working with the 63-year-old.
In the series, which aired on Britbox last year, the 29-year-old plays the role of Lady Francis Derwent.
Known as Frankie to her friends, the young woman is trying to solve a mystery with the local vicar’s son, Bobby Jones (played by Will Poulter).
At the beginning of the episode, Bobby discovers a man at the bottom of the cliffs along the Welsh coastline.
While the police set about discovering the man’s identity, Bobby and Lady Francis try to solve the odd question he uttered before dying, “Why didn’t they ask Evans?”

After being a huge fan of the novel since childhood, actor Hugh adapted the Agatha Christie classic and featured in the three-part series himself.
When asked what it was like working alongside Hugh Laurie, actress Lucy Boynton had nothing but praise.
She said: “It was really wonderful being directed by him.
“I think when you’re being directed by an actor, you do have a different kind of shorthand and understanding and so a different kind of dialogue with each other.
“Especially an actor like him, he’s just brilliant. And of course, a brilliant writer. So it was just such a privilege to feel in such safe hands.
“Especially, like I said, with a character like Frankie, who’s so important to him, and who Hugh has such a great understanding for and respect for.
“So to be guided by him, we, I think, yeah, it is a rare privilege to feel that safe and to just be able to have fun with it. It’s so liberating having that trust.”
Lucy’s character in the series was Hugh’s first crush growing up when he read the book, which she confessed was a major challenge when he initially told her.
The actress commented: “It just added responsibility and pressure, but it was also great to then be guided by someone who loves the character so much.

“So, that was quite useful, as then I felt in very safe hands, knowing that she’s sacred to him in a way.”
The second instalment of Why Didn’t They Ask Evans is available to watch the following night of its initial debut as Bobby and Frankie’s adventure continues.
A synopsis of the next episode reads: “Bobby and Frankie are convinced a shocking death thought to be suicide was actually murder, so they hatch a plan to infiltrate Frankie into the home of their prime suspect.”
Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? continues Monday, April 10 on ITVX and ITV1 from 9pm.
