Paramount Network’s hit western drama Yellowstone will finally return to screens with season five in November. While fans are eager to find out their favourite character’s fates, the future may not look too hopeful for Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) and his wife Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille).
When Yellowstone came to an end earlier this year, things seemed rocky for Kayce and Monica’s relationship.
Although the couple had moved off his father’s John Dutton (Kevin Costner) ranch after a series of attacks, Kayce had undergone a vision quest.
He wanted to gain clarity as to why he kept seeing visions of a wolf during specific moments in his families life and decided to do the intense indigenous rituals.
Though the vision quest came to an end, Kayce told Monica: “I saw the end of us.”
Although fans were uncertain whether this meant the end of their relationship or the end of his family, the actor dropped a major clue.
Speaking on the upcoming season, actor Luke Grimes revealed: “When you meet him [in season 5], he’s off the ranch.
“He’s sort of almost happy. He seems like he likes his little life on the res with the family.”
“But as the story progresses, you realize he can’t stay away for too long. Something calls him to take care of that legacy,” Luke told Entertainment Weekly.
Following a series of shocking attacks in the season three finale, the lives of John, Kayce and his sister Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) were left uncertain.
Although the season four premiere revealed the trio had survived, Monica was left shaken up as she and their son Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) were attacked by a masked man.
As a result, they moved away from the ranch, which was where Monica revealed she was pregnant with their second child.
With Kayce seemingly moving back to the ranch in season five, it’s unlikely they will return as a family.
This could perhaps be the end of the couple, who fought through adversaries to be together.
During the end of the vision quest, Kayce also saw two paths forward, and neither of them would bode well for him.
The trailer for season five revealed John would be sworn in as Governor of Montana which meant he would have to devote more attention to politics.
As a result, he could call Kayce to return to the ranch to fulfil the duties he no longer had time for.
The Dutton family could also use an extra pair of hands as John’s new position could bring in new enemies.
In his role as Governor, John will have a greater voice to speak on what goes on around Montana, making it hard for the people who want a piece of his Yellowstone ranch.
As the land was the largest ranch in the United States, casino moguls, the Broken Rock reservation and land developers had offered large sums of money for a portion of the ranch.
However, John refused because the ranch had been in his family for seven generations and his decision wasn’t always received kindly.
Yellowstone season five premieres Sunday, November 13 on Paramount Network in the US and on Monday on Paramount + in the UK.
