An army veteran who vanished before being found dead in a woodland took her own life, a coroner found.

‘Headstrong’ Chelsea Allen, 31, was found dead close to the A170 on July 4 last year – eight days after she was first reported missing.

An inquest into her death at Northallerton Coroners Court heard the pizza chef had vanished following a night drinking with her girlfriend Natasha Lewzeyn in their hometown of Helmsley, North Yorkshire.

Ms Lewzeyn told the inquest the former armourer struggled with her mental health and ‘became someone else’ after a drink.

Assistant coroner Sarah Watson gave a conclusion of suicide and said the cause of death was hanging.

She said she was satisfied no one else was involved and her death was ‘her intention at that particular moment in time,’ York Mix reported.

North Yorkshire Police carried out an extensive search after she vanished which included a mountain rescue team, sniffer dogs and a police helicopter

She added that Chelsea sounded like an ‘amazing young woman. She sounds wonderful.’

Chelsea’s father Sean paid tribute to her at the inquest, describing her as a ‘lovely girl’ who ‘would do anything for anyone.’

He said: ‘Chelsea would do anything for anyone, but she was another person when she had a drink, she wasn’t alcohol dependent, but she didn’t know when to stop.

‘She was in the army and originally went in as an armourer, repairing guns. It was in the army she started drinking and her friends called her Sambuca.

‘When we went to her passing out parade, officers said she was a lovely girl, but she was easily influenced.

‘Chelsea had brains, but she was head-strong, if she didn’t want to do something she just wouldn’t do it.’

Det Insp Jennifer Waddington of North Yorkshire police told the inquest the couple has been to The Feathers pub in Helmsley and continued to drink at a friend’s house where ‘everyone was in good spirits’.

They returned home at around 2.43am on June 26 where a neighbour reported a disturbance to police after they went into the garden and argued after a row.

Ms Allen left the scene before officers arrived at 3.15am and Ms Lewzeyn went to bed, thinking that her girlfriend had her phone with her and had indicated she had gone back to her own flat.

But when she woke the next day she found the phone still in the house and messages from Ms Allen’s work asking why she wasn’t there.

Ms Lewzeyn reported her as missing – triggering an extensive search which included a mountain rescue team, sniffer dogs and a police helicopter.

North Yorkshire Police concluded that there were no suspicious circumstances after her body was discovered.

Her father added that around 450 people attended Chelsea’s funeral, showing just how well-loved she was.

But her death had come as a huge shock, with her parents adding: ‘We’ll never get answers.’
