Worried fans fear their favourite McDonald’s items could be axed after the boss of the fast food giant announced plans to streamline menus.

The fast food giant temporarily shut all of its US offices yesterday as bosses prepared to get rid of a number of corporate employees around the world.

CEO Chris Kempczinski warned of job cuts in January, telling staff the firm had become ‘unfocused’ and changes were needed to help it grow.

In an email, he also suggested that menus could be simplified in the restructuring, writing: ‘We had across the globe 70 different, distinct versions of what a crispy chicken sandwich would look like. I don’t need 70 different permutations of a chicken sandwich.’

Now it is feared that other key items on the menu which have been duplicated and modified according to local tastes could be removed to scale down.

Part of McDonald’s allure abroad comes from different countries putting their own twist on classics such as the hamburger, Filet-O-Fish and McMuffin.

Variations of a McDonald’s hamburger includes Japan’s ‘Samurai Mac’ Roasted Soy Sauce Double Thick Beef burger, which features two unique patties on top of each other with cheese and onions.

Spain has a very interesting twist with their Signature Double Egg Benedictine that has two beef patties, bacon, Gouda cheese, crispy onion, egg, poppy seed bread and a creamy hollandaise sauce.

There is also a Mushroom Angus Beef Burger from Taiwan, featuring a French herb sauce and milk champagne European bread, meanwhile Korea boasts three types of onion with their 1955 Triple Onion beef burger containing grilled onion, red onion and fried onion.

On to chicken burgers, the classic US McChicken sandwich has been given a makeover in Japan, which comes loaded with teriyaki sauce, while in Korea the McSpicy Shanghai Burger turns up the heat with some hot sauce.

McDonald’s restaurants in Hong Kong have a unique GCB burger, which consists of a grilled chicken thigh with lettuce and chargrill sauce.

Spain also has a delicious-looking McCrispy Honey Mustard chicken burger, which comes with crispy chicken, gouda cheese and Batavia lettuce, topped with mustard and honey sauce. And this all sits inside a potato bread bun.

Meanwhile, Australia has kept their chicken sandwich relatively similar with a simple Chicken ‘n’ cheese burger, made from a combination of crispy coated chicken, cheese and mayonnaise.

Perhaps the most significant variations of a McDonald’s burger can be found within the seafood department.

The classic Filet-O-Fish option has been given a major re-vamp in Japan with their Bai Shrimp Filet-O, featuring two fried prawn patties topped with a layer of lettuce.

Korea has another onion-based burger with their Shrimp Onion burger that comes with a fresh shrimp patty and crispy fried onions on top.

Meanwhile, Cyprus has a very interesting Sweet Chili Fish Burger and Cyprus boasts a breaded whole-shrimp patty burger which comes with crispy lettuce and sweet-chili sauce all sandwiched between a soft corndust bun.

If global McDonald’s fans are upset that burger items could be taken off the menu soon, they will be even more upset to see these weird and wonderful breakfast McMuffins go – and it’s pretty likely you haven’t tried them before.

If you find yourself in a Korean McDonald’s you could try their BLT Egg Muffin, which sounds slightly strange for breakfast.

Alternatively, you might fancy a Scrambled Eggs burger in Hong Kong or a Potato Omelette McMuffin in Spain.

And perhaps most bizarrely – Poland has a Cottage Cheese and Radish McMuffin, which they describe as giving you the taste ‘of a unique homemade breakfast’.
