AT least 25 people were killed after a bus carrying wedding guests plummeted 1600ft into a mountain gorge in India.

The large group were travelling back from Laldhang in the Haridwar district before the coach hurtled off the road in Pauri Garhwal.

According to officials, at least 45 people were on board when the bus terrifyingly veered off the mountain road and fell into the ravine.

At least 21 passengers were rescued in an overnight operation by SDRF with the help of police.

Deputy General of Police Ashok Kumar has confirmed the incident and confirmed the number of death. The injured were also shifted to different hospitals for treatment after a bus falls off the edge in the Birokhal area of Dhumakot in Uttarakhand.

"25 people were found dead in the Pauri Garhwal bus accident that took place last night in the Birokhal area of Dhumakot. Police and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) rescued 21 people overnight; the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals,” Kumar maintained.

The footage also showed the rescue teams evacuating injured passengers in the overnight operation.

"The bus accident in Pauri, Uttarakhand is heart-rending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest. Rescue operations are underway. All possible assistance will be provided to those affected," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted, quoting Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu has also expressed grief following the incident and hoped for the swift recovery of the injured in the incident.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami is also pained by the deaths in the incident. He has expressed his condolence.
