Gallery won’t have to ‘hold the roof up with Blue Poles’ after funding
Cultural institutions including the National Gallery of Australia and the National Library are poised to receive a funding lifeline in the May budget after the federal government signalled it would not let them run out of money.
Services including the popular Trove online portal to more than 6 billion digital items, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Maritime Museum, which all faced an end to key funding sources on June 30, are also expected to have their financial futures assured.

Finance Minister Katy Gallagher on Monday revealed the government would have to find billions of dollars to cover a series of “fiscal cliffs” caused by so-called “zombie” programs expected to continue but without their funding baked into the budget forward estimates. The government found $4.1 billion worth of zombie programs in the October budget.

Voice split gets personal as Albanese rebukes Leeser in parliament
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has demanded the opposition’s Indigenous Affairs spokesman show the moral courage to back his long-held support for a Voice to parliament.
The prime minister, who has staked his political authority on the contentious referendum’s success, underscored the growing partisan gulf over the reconciliation push when he pointed at Coalition frontbencher Julian Leeser during question time.

Albanese urged him to support the proposed Indigenous advisory body, as Leeser advised on the design of the Voice as a lawyer before entering parliament.
“He should have the courage to stand up for the principled positions that he has historically taken on this issue and support Yes when it is put to the Australian people this year,” Albanese said in parliament.

Armed woman kills children, adults in Nashville school
A female shooter wielding two “assault-style” rifles and a pistol killed three students and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville on Monday (US time) in the latest in a series of mass shootings in a country growing increasingly unnerved by bloodshed in schools.
The suspect also died after being shot by police following the violence at The Covenant School, a Presbyterian school for about 200 students from preschool through to sixth grade.

Police said the shooter was a 28-year-old woman from Nashville, after initially saying she appeared to be in her teens.
Authorities were working to determine whether the woman, who has yet to be identified, had a connection to the school.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department began receiving calls at 10.13 am of a shooter at The Covenant School.
Officers could hear gunfire coming from the school’s second floor, Don Aaron, a police spokesperson, told reporters.
Two officers from a five-member team shot and killed her in what Aaron described as a lobby area.
