‘Well loved’ bar worker, 22, who suffered serious head injuries and a broken spine in Ayia Napa buggy crash has woken up from a coma but still has ‘a long road to recovery’, her family say

A ‘well-loved’ bar worker who suffered serious head injuries, a broken spine and clavicle after her buggy crashed in Ayia Napa has awoken from a coma – but her family warn she still has a ‘long road to recovery’.
Ellie Horrocks, 22, from Westhoughton, Greater Manchester, was rushed to hospital where doctors placed her in a medically induced coma, following the tragic accident last Monday.
Her aunt Sarah previously said Ellie, who had move to Cyprus in May to work in a bar, had hired the buggy to see the sunset in another part of the resort but was confronted by an oncoming car, forcing her to swerve and the vehicle to overturn.
Leanne Horrocks, her mother, immediately set up a fundraising page to help fly Ellie home in an air ambulance, which is estimated to cost around £60,000.
The ‘amazing’ and ‘creative’ woman is being treated in ICU at a hospital in Nicosia, with her mother staying in a hotel nearby and can only visit her for an hour a day.

The family announced publicly today that Ellie had woken up from her coma and is ‘progressing’.
They said: ‘The family is pleased to inform you that Ellie has now come out of her coma. The doctor is pleased with her progress although she still has a long road of recovery ahead of her.
‘Nicosia hospitals are liaising with the family and a UK hospital in order that arrangements can be made to bring Ellie back home via air ambulance. We will update again as soon as we can. Thank you for your kind words and continued support.’
Speaking last week, Ellie’s aunt said: ‘She’s young, so she likes going out with her friends, she’s got loads and loads of friends, but she’s also just a very creative person. She’s a really, really, well-loved girl.’
On the GoFundMe page, Ellie’s mother said: ‘We urgently want to get her home to Manchester, to be treated in a specialist neurology hospital where she can heal and hopefully recover close to her family and friends.

A GoFundMe page to help bring Ellie home has now raised £69,182 out of its £70,000 target
‘The cost of repatriation from Nicosia Hospital in Cyprus to the UK is significant and not covered by Ellie’s insurance and this has meant we have had to reach out for help.’
The page has now raised £69,182 out of its £70,000 target. Last week her aunt Sarah said the family wanted to thank everyone who had donated so far, saying the family had been ‘overwhelmed by the messages of support, even from strangers’.
‘All the donations and the kindness everyone has shown has just been incredible. So, we want to thank them all,’ she added.
