‘Go figure!’ was President Biden’s reaction to the news that conservative Rishi Sunak would be Britain’s first prime minister of Indian descent.
The president was delivering remarks at a celebration of the Hindu festival Diwali. He said that Sunak’s rise to power is ‘a groundbreaking milestone and it matters.’
‘Diwali is a reminder that each of us has the power, has the power, to dispel darkness and bring light to the world,’ Biden said in remarks at the White House. ‘It’s a choice, and we make that choice every day. It’s true in our lives and in the life of this nation, especially in the life of a democracy, whether here in America or for the families back in India marking 75 years of independence and whether it’s the United Kingdom, where just today we got news that Rishi Sunak is now the prime minister.’

In 2006, while running for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, Biden boasted of his support from the Indian-American community: ‘I’ve had a great relationship. In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.’
