Body of missing Brit, 60, is found four days after he vanished during nature walk in Jamaica

The body of a British man has been found by residents four days after he went missing on a nature walk in Jamaica.

Robert Dyer, 60, a diabetic, who arrived on the Caribbean island last Friday was reportedly found unresponsive in a vegetated area on Thursday by a search party, in the Ballard’s valley area of St Elizabeth Jamaica.

The grandfather and cancer survivor had been without vital medication for a heart complaint, type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure for days since taking the nature walk alone on Sunday morning in Ballards Valley, two days into his retreat. 

Mr Dyer, from Lewisham, had been there to visit his brother and family.

According to Jamaica Observer Online, he last communicated with relatives about 1pm on Monday to say he had gotten lost.

A source close to the family said that Dyer’s walking stick was found about 2am on Thursday, and his body was found later in the day.

‘The people found his walking stick and decided that they were going to push out early on Thursday to continue the search,’ the source said. They added that his body ‘was found close to Bull Savannah, so it seems as if he made a wrong turn.’

A local spokesman from the community confirmed that a body had been found and that police will be investigating the circumstances of his death. 

‘After an exhaustive search involving many people from the community we have found a body which was in an unresponsive state.

‘The police has been notified and may put out a statement later,’ the spokesman said.

On Tuesday, Acting Superintendent Coleridge Minto, said that citizens of Ballards Valley, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Airway and the canine division were assisting in the search.

It is understood 250 residents joined the search party. 

‘We have already gone through miles of terrain and the search is still ongoing as we continue our efforts to locate this individual,’ he said.

Minto on Wednesday said scores of police personnel were among a search team.

He said drones were also used during the search.
