Boost for Liz Truss as 11 Tory whips come out to back her in leadership fight

- The chief whip has lifted the requirement for whips to remain neutral in public
Eleven Tory whips came out to back Liz Truss yesterday in a major boost for her campaign.
After chief whip Chris Heaton-Harris removed the requirement for whips to remain neutral in public, MPs including Stuart Anderson and David TC Davies announced their support.
Whip James Duddridge said: ‘I have known Liz for over 25 years, and I have seen her deliver time and time again.’
Rishi Sunak has the backing of five ex-chief whips including Sir Gavin Williamson and Mark Harper.

‘We’re delighted to have 11 members of the Whips Office onboard and backing Liz’ bold plan for the country.’
Assistant whip Scott Mann, the MP for North Cornwall, said he felt Miss Truss has the ‘best vision for coastal and rural constituencies’ and would make an ‘excellent’ prime minister.
‘She has given me assurances that she understands the nature of the housing challenges in Cornwall and other key issues such as dentistry and the NHS,’ he said in a statement.

He also praised her ‘vision for the country’ and leadership on the world stage, such as her response to the Ukraine war.
Assistant whip Mr Anderson, MP for Wolverhampton South West, said Miss Truss’s ‘economic position, her commitment to increase defence spending to 3per cent of GDP, and her parliamentary experience make her the best option to lead our country’.
