Boris Johnson gives his backing to the Lionesses ahead of Sunday’s World Cup Final in his latest Mail column as ex-PM says the ‘inspiration’ they give is a ‘lesson’ to the appalling Taliban regime in Afghanistan
Boris Johnson is giving his backing to the Lionesses ahead of their historic Women’s World Cup Final on Sunday.
The former prime minister, writing exclusively for the Daily Mail, hails the ‘inspiration’ the England side ‘give to us all’ ahead of their crunch clash against Spain in Sydney.
Mr Johnson also points to the ‘lesson’ the nation’s female footballers are giving to the ‘appalling’ Taliban regime in Kabul.
Shortly after the hardline Islamist group re-took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, they banned the country’s women and girls from playing sport.
Mr Johnson today tells Mail readers: ‘I’m backing our wonderful Lionesses this Sunday because of the inspiration they give to us all.
‘And, above all, for the lesson they hold for the appalling government in Kabul – exactly two years after that city tragically fell, once again, to the Taliban.’
Watch out for Boris Johnson’s column on Mail Online from 5pm and in Saturday’s Daily Mail.
