‘If there are newts here… I’ll be delighted to cohabit with those threatened amphibians!’ Boris Johnson reveals his plans could be under threat in latest Daily Mail column
Boris Johnson today joins the fight to save the humble British newt after the aquatic amphibians threatened to derail his plan for a swimming pool.
The former prime minister, writing exclusively for the Daily Mail, comes out batting for the great crested newt after officials queried construction at his family home.
South Oxfordshire District Council staff said work at the property he shares with Carrie and their three young children could have a possible impact on a local population.
Due to a marked decline in population over the past 30 years the newts are a protected species in Britain.
But Mr Johnson today tells Mail readers: ‘I want you to know that if there are newts here, no-one could be more delighted than me to cohabit with those threatened amphibians.
‘And I believe that it is our job to protect them and do everything we can to make sure they do not suffer the continual decline in population that we have seen over the last 30 years.’
Watch out for Boris Johnson’s column on Mail Online from 5pm and in Saturday’s Daily Mail.
