- Locals pulled him from a sewer but police pronounced him as dead at scene
A British tourist has been found dead lying face down in a sewer in Cambodia.
Charlie Gray, 30, from Bristol, was discovered by locals in the Kampot province, around 90 miles from the capital of Phnom Penh on Thursday afternoon.
His family are now being supported by Foreign Office officials, a spokesperson said.
Gray was wearing a pair of black trainers and black shorts but did not have anything on his upper body. Locals tried to rouse him but he had no signs of life.
Residents had pulled him up on to the grass next to the drainage ditch and turned him on to his back. He was surrounded by thick grass several metres from the nearest road.
Police arrived shortly after he was found at around 4pm local time. They pronounced him dead at the scene and his body was taken away for a post-mortem examination.

Resident Bong Chea, one of the neighbours, who saw the victim’s body, said: ‘The man was dead when we found him. Somebody moved him to check if he was alive and try and wake him up. He was already dead.
‘Nobody knows how he fell into the sewer. We also don’t know who the man was. We hardly see foreigners in this area.’
Police believe that the victim could have fallen face down into the sewer and drowned from swallowing the shallow water.
However, an officer said today that his body could have been dumped in the ditch. They are now waiting for the results from his dead body to find the cause of death.
Officers from the Krong Kampot district station said Charlie’s body was currently at the Wat Teuk Thla temple in Phnom Penh.
Lieutenant Colonel Seang said: ‘The autopsy results will show how the foreigner died. If they show there was foul play, yes, we will investigate this further.
‘He could have fallen into the sewer and died. Yes, it’s possible he died somewhere else and his body was left at the sewer.’
UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Cambodia, and are in touch with the local authorities.’
