Cancer survivors have revealed how they were callously ditched by their partners after informing them of their devastating diagnoses.
Edward Miskie found out his boyfriend was cheating in the middle of his battle with a rare, aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – then learned that the flings had begun months earlier when he was diagnosed.
Miskie’s tale is similar to hundreds across America, whose partners and spouses walk away during their lowest point amid dreaded hospital appointments and life-saving surgeries.
New York-based Miskie told DailyMail.com: ‘I was diagnosed in late November 2011. I had been with this person for seven months or so. We had talked about moving in together.’
When he got his cancer diagnosis, Miskie said: ‘There was an energy shift. I could tell something was different.
‘He was a constant for me, for all the time he’d been with me, I depended on him. He was my normalcy.’

Miskie, pictured left during his cancer treatment and right now, found out that his ex started cheating on him when he got the disease. Miskie’s chemotherapy and radiation treatment ended in October 2012 and he was declared cancer free – and he’s since written a book about his ordeal
Miskie, who was 25 at the time, said that with everything else in his life being so unstable, he was holding on to his partner during the troubling times.
He added: ‘Once things too a turn for a worst, we were figuring out what the next step for us was.
‘But he’d been seeing someone else from the moment I was diagnosed. I was so angry at the time, I felt betrayed. I felt terrified. This piece of normal in the chaos of the cancer experience was now unstable.
‘That anger, fear, sadness, of the betrayal all came crashing down at once. You feel like a foolish idiot.’
The pair were long distance, but Miskie’s partner would attend his hospital appointments and doctor checkups with him when he could. His ex tried to deny he was cheating on him when Miskie finally ended the relationship.
He added: ‘The reality was that I had larger problems to content with, so it was easier to get over faster. But that certainly took a toll on my energy for my treatment.’
Miskie’s chemotherapy and radiation treatment ended in October 2012 and he was declared cancer free – and he’s since written a book about his ordeal.
The author said: ‘He gets completely dragged in the book. Revenge is mine.’
Despite a decade since his heartbreak, Miskie said that his former partner did try and reach out. He was watching Hairspray Live! in 2016 when his ex texted him.
‘He texted me, “I was watching Hairspray and it made me think of you,” I said “don’t”.’
Reflecting on his journey, Miskie concluded: ‘The person that is left is stronger than they think they are.
‘When major tragedies happen to us, it’s always beneficial to feel the feelings, but also realize that this is an opportunity to empower yourself.’
Shelli Michael, from Douglasville, Georgia, found out that she had ovarian cancer at the age of 34 – and on top of that, her partner at the time left her
The single mom-of-one said that eight days after being diagnosed, her boyfriend at the time dumped her out of the blue
Other cancer survivors, like Edward, have taken to social media to process their grief and hurt after partners left them when they were at their lowest.
Shelli Michael, from Douglasville, Georgia, found out that she had ovarian cancer at the age of 34 – but that was not the only troubling ordeal she had to go through.
She said: ‘My whole world was turned upside down.’
The single mom-of-one said that eight days after being diagnosed, her boyfriend at the time dumped her out of the blue.
She said: ‘The guy I was dating decided to dump me. He didn’t even have the cahoonas to say that he couldn’t handle the cancer.
‘He just made up something else. I glad he was taken out of my life, but terrible timing.
‘To have to deal with the cancer diagnosis and then being dumped after that. Lovely.’
Another woman, currently battling breast cancer, told a similar tale of sorrow that saw her battling a lovesplit during a terrifying health scare
Going by her Twitch name Vadar Girl, she said: ‘I let him go, and I’m happy I did. It was definitely a blessing in disguise’
Twitch streamer Vadar Girl, who is currently battling breast cancer, told a similar tale of sorrow that saw her battling a lovesplit during a terrifying health scare: ‘I remember crying so hard that day when he left me. I felt abandoned.
‘But I had to get myself together and be brave and strong and think about my health. He was not worth stressing out. Because stress is so bad as it is, but when you’re fighting cancer, it’s the worst thing. You obviously want to avoid stress.
‘I let him go, and I’m happy I did. It was definitely a blessing in disguise.
‘I fought all by myself, I didn’t need anyone with me. The hardest part about it is feeling alone, feeling broken.
‘Already battling cancer, feeling like you’re basically just trying to survive. I know how badly it feels when you’re dumped in the middle of fighting for your life.
‘If I can get through it, you can get through it.
‘People who do this are cowards. They are completely heartless. That’s not someone I want to be with anyway. And I’m better for it now.’

Another person who has had to face similar battles is Nicole Gramlich, who works as a psychiatric pharmacist.
She said that her ex-husband left her while she was battling breast cancer.
Gramlich, from Kansas City, Missouri, was just 28-years-old when she received the diagnosis. She told TikTok: ‘He abandoned me during my time of greatest need.
‘I know now that I always deserved better. I am a survivor and I am thriving.’
She is now engaged to her new fiancé.
This follows news that a woman running the London Marathon for her ex-boyfriend admitted she left him because she couldn’t cope with his cancer battle.
Danielle Epstein, 32, was buying a house with Jelle Fresen in London last year when he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain tumor at just 37.
He needed a complex operation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and had to learn to walk again.
While all this was going on physics teacher Danielle began having panic attacks and her mental health plummeted – so she ended their relationship.
She moved to Thailand but remained friends with Jelle – and is now running a marathon for a brain tumor charity.
She said she was still ‘figuring out’ her friendship with Jelle, adding: ‘I felt like the most awful person, leaving somebody because they have cancer, but it was damaging my mental health and it wasn’t helping Jelle.’
The couple were buying a house in Palmers Green, North London, when Jelle, who works as a Google software engineer, began vomiting and having dizzy spells.
After numerous consultations with GPs and ineffective treatments for an ear infection, the vomiting became much worse.
Jelle went for a private MRI scan using his health insurance with Google.
Doctors found a ‘grade 4 medulloblastoma’ tumor – normally a cancer that affects children – and he was booked in for surgery in September.
Danielle said: ‘We were on a certain path to a certain future and within one day we knew it wasn’t going to work out like that any more.
‘I was so worried and devastated, I couldn’t sleep or eat.
‘I was having panic attacks and was on so much medication to sort myself out I just couldn’t function.’
Realizing they had to split up, she moved to Thailand with her father. But she has stayed friends with Jelle, and kept up to date with his recovery.
