‘We’re living in a banana republic!’ Furious Donald Trump Jr claims his father was only indicted now ‘because he’s leading in the polls’ and to divert from Hunter Biden’s shady business dealings
- Donald Trump was indicted on felony charges Tuesday in connection with Jan 6
- The four-count indictment is the third criminal case against former President
Donald Trump Jr. has hit out at the indictment of his father on charges related to the Jan 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, claiming the timing of the criminal case amounts to election interference.
Donald Trump was indicted on felony charges Tuesday for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election, with the Justice Department acting to hold him accountable for an unprecedented effort to block the peaceful transfer of presidential power and threaten American democracy.
The four-count indictment, the third criminal case against Trump, provided deeper insight into a dark moment that has already been the subject of exhaustive federal investigations and captivating public hearings.
But the Trump campaign labelled the charges fake, and asked why it took the Justice Department two-and-a-half years to bring the charges.
Speaking to Newsmax, Trump Jr sought to offer a response.
‘Because he’s leading in the polls,’ Trump Jr. told anchor Rob Schmitt. ‘Because they’re afraid of him becoming president and dismantling the uni-party, dismantling the deep state. I don’t believe in this level of coincidence anymore.’
Trump Jr went on to point out that each of Donald Trump’s three indictments were brought in close proximity to damaging revelations pertaining to President Biden’s son Hunter, declaring: ‘We’re living in a banana republic!’

The sentiment echoes that of enraged Republicans who labelled the third indictment of Trump a ‘witch hunt’ conveniently timed to come down one day after Devon Archer testified about the Biden family business deals.
Republicans rip into the DOJ for charging Trump just 24 hours after Devon Archer’s bombshell testimony on Biden family’s foreign business deals
‘Less than 24 hours ago, Congress heard testimony from Hunter Biden’s longtime business partner that Joe Biden joined Hunter’s business calls over 20 times,’ said GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik.
‘Today’s sham indictment of Donald Trump is yet another desperate attempt to distract attention away from the mounting evidence of Joe Biden’s direct involvement in his family’s illegal influence peddling scheme.’
Even in a year of rapid-succession legal reckonings for Trump, Tuesday’s indictment, with charges including conspiring to defraud the United States government that he once led, was stunning in its allegations that a former president assaulted the ‘bedrock function’ of democracy.
It’s the first time the defeated president, who is the early front-runner for next year’s Republican presidential nomination, is facing legal consequences for his ultimately failed effort to cling to power.
‘The attack on our nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy,’ said Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, whose office has spent months investigating Trump.
‘It was fueled by lies, lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. government: the nation’s process of collecting counting and certifying the results of the presidential election.’
Due to the ‘dishonesty, fraud and deceit’ by Trump and some of his closest allies, the indictment says, his supporters ‘violently attacked the Capitol and halted the proceeding.’
The Trump campaign called the charges ‘fake’ and asked why it took two-and-a-half years to bring them.
Trump has said he did nothing wrong, and has accused Smith and the Justice Department of trying to harm his 2024 campaign.
It comes as the judge appointed to oversee the former President’s latest criminal case was revealed DC federal Judge Tanya Chutkan, who was declared ‘the toughest punisher’ of rioters charged with offenses relating to January 6, and worked at a law firm associated with Hunter Biden.

In a profile by the Associated Press, written last year, they said: ‘Chutkan has handed out tougher sentences than the [Justice Department] was seeking in seven cases, matched its requests in four others and sent all 11 riot defendants who have come before her behind bars.’
The article, titled ‘In Jan. 6 cases, 1 judge stands out as the toughest punisher’, continues: ‘In the four cases in which prosecutors did not seek jail time, Chutkan gave terms ranging from 14 days to 45 days.’
The AP article continued that Chutkan jailed, despite prosecutors not asking for it, ‘an Ohio couple who climbed through a broken window of the U.S. Capitol.’
The 61-year-old, nominated by former President Barack Obama, was born in Jamaica and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s law school.
Chutkan had worked at the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner from 2002 until she was confirmed a federal judge in 2014.
Boies Schiller has strong connections to the Democratic Party and then-second son Hunter Biden — whose father is likely to face Trump in the 2024 election — was of counsel at the firm from 2009 to 2014.
