Donald Trump has paid tribute to his ‘outstanding and beautiful’ first wife Ivana Trump ahead of her funeral Mass in New York City today.
Ivana, an icon of 1980s style, wealth and excess, was a businesswoman who helped Trump build an empire that launched him to the presidency.
Trump told Ivana’s long-time friend Cindy Adams in an interview for the New York Post that he and Ivana ‘began their lives together with such a great relationship’.
He said Ivana was ‘different’ and she ‘never gave up’ because she was such a ‘hard worker’.
Ivana’s three children with former President Donald Trump – Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric – are expected at the Wednesday afternoon gathering at St. Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Trump and his wife Melania were spotted returning to New York City ahead of Ivana’s funeral service today.
Ivana’s family announced Thursday that the 73-year-old had died at her Manhattan home. Authorities said the death was an accident, with blunt impact injuries to her torso as the cause.

Speaking to Adams, who went to Ivana and Trump’s wedding, the former president said: ‘I’m just thinking how well you knew Ivana. You knew her very well. You knew her from the first – from the very beginning.
‘From when I first met her, she was beautiful. She was special. I know you and she liked each other from the earliest day.’
Trump paused and quietly added: ‘She was outstanding. Beautiful inside and out. We began all of it, our lives together, with such a great relationship.’
Speaking of what he remembers as a defining attribute of Ivana, Trump said: ‘That she was different. That she never gave up.
‘Beautiful, yes, but she was also a hard worker. No matter how rough things were or how badly they looked she never fell down. She went from communism to our lives together. She took nothing for granted.’
Ivana and Donald Trump (pictured together in 1988) met in the 1970s and were married from 1977 to 1992. In the 1980s, they were a power couple, and she became well known in her own right, instantly recognizable with her blond hair in an updo and her glamorous look.

He added: ‘A second’s pause, then: ‘Look, let’s us just manage to get through this awful painful experience. And after this, just remember, just remember what I’m telling you… 78 is not old.’
Ivana and Donald Trump met in the 1970s and were married from 1977 to 1992. In the 1980s, they were a power couple, and she became well known in her own right, instantly recognizable with her blond hair in an updo and her glamorous look.
Ivana Trump also took part in her husband’s businesses, managing one of his Atlantic City casinos and picking out some of the design elements in New York City’s Trump Tower.
Their very public divorce was ugly, but in recent years they were friendly. Ivana Trump an enthusiastic supporter of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, and said they spoke on a regular basis.
