Furious drivers have blasted an ‘idiotic’ new 20mph speed limit sign painted on a London road which is right next to a 30mph sign.
Painted road markings showing that Streatham High Road, south London, was a 20mph zone suddenly appeared next to an existing 30mph sign on the busy thoroughfare last week.
Amid the conflicting speed limit signs, Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the road is still in fact a 30mph zone and will continue to be until it drops to 20mph in December. The reduction will improve road safety, TfL said.
It comes amid a backdrop of criticism over Sadiq Khan’s so-called ‘war on motorists’ which has also focused on the Ulez expansion, constant roadworks, low-traffic neighbourhoods and cycle lanes. The Mayor of London has denied such a war exists and insists he has a duty to tackle ‘poisonous air’.
Motorist Alex Mapp, 41, said that he had to do a double take as he passed the confusing road signs on his way back from the supermarket.

‘I slowed down because of the new road markings, but then seeing that sign totally threw me off,’ he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

‘It made me question if I was seeing okay. It’s ridiculous that no one spotted this when they were drawing the new signs on the road.
‘I come down here regularly, but can you imagine if you didn’t know the area? It’s very confusing.’
Commuter Florence McCallum added that other drivers appeared to be distracted by the conflicting signs.
She said: ‘It’s so idiotic. You have drivers slowing down then speeding up and then slamming the brakes on again.
‘It’s so, so confusing for everyone. Nobody knows what they’re doing. It needs sorting out soon.’
A TfL spokesperson said: ‘To reduce deaths and serious injuries on the roads, we are currently in the process of introducing 65km (40 miles) of new 20mph speed limits in Lambeth and other boroughs in south London.’
‘We are installing new signs and all signage will be updated before the lower speed limit comes into force,’ the spokesperson added.

From Yorkshire and London to Wales, where a 20mph standard speed limit was imposed on hundreds of roads last month, hard-working drivers are contending with laws that force them to crawl from A to B.
Critics have told MailOnline that the restriction is ‘stupid’, and claim the speed reductions have clogged roads with gridlock and doubled commuting times, and that some drivers are simply ignoring the law to tear along streets at 50mph.
Mr Sunak has put quelling ‘hare-brained schemes’ like blanket 20mph speed limits and low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) at the heart of his pitch to voters.
The shift in strategy, along with watering down Net Zero policies, comes after the backlash at ULEZ was credited for the Tories hanging on in the Uxbridge & South Ruislip by-election.
It comes after Wales became the first country in the UK to reduce speed limits down from 30mph in built-up residential areas with a view to saving lives and cutting costs for the NHS.
