Drug-dealers jailed after police discover cannabis stash worth £180K

Drug-dealers are jailed after police make surprise discovery of huge cannabis stash worth £180K… after stopping a car with a cracked windscreen on the M6

  • A vehicle was stopped on M6 near Thelwall Viaduct, Warrington
  • Derek Miller, 36, and Mark Lindsey, 46, were both handed prison sentences
  • The car had a cracked windscreen and up to £180,000 worth of cannabis inside

Two drug dealers have been jailed after police discovered a car stashing £180,000 worth of cannabis on the M6 motorway when they pulled the vehicle over because of a crack on its windscreen.

A red Renault Kangoo was intercepted by traffic officers near the Thelwall Viaduct, Warrington, on January 17.

Derek Miller, the driver of the vehicle, was given a drug test by officers which came back positive.

Police subsequently searched the vehicle and found three vacuum-packed bags of cannabis, weighing approximately 26kg, giving the drugs a value of up to £180,000.

Mr Miller and passenger Mark Lindsey, both of Cambusnethan, North Lanarkshire, were arrested on suspicion of drug offences.

Mark Lindsey was sentenced to six months in prison

At first, the car was pulled over because it is a motoring offence to drive with a cracked windscreen, according to the Highway Code.

‘The Highway Code states that drivers should have a full view of the road ahead and glass should be maintained in a good condition. A cracked windscreen can obscure driver view – if a motorist is stopped, it could result in a fixed penalty of three points on their licence and a fine,’ the RAC says.

They were then charged with being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs, offences to which Miller and Lindsey both pleaded guilty.

A sentencing at Chester Crown Court on 24 April saw Mr Miller receive an eight-month jail sentence whilst Mr Lindsey was sentenced to six months in prison.

Police Constable Martyn Huyton-Berry, of the Northern Area Investigation Team, said: ‘This is a fantastic result following a simple stop check for a cracked windscreen we’ve recovered more than £100,000 worth of Class B drugs and two men are now behind bars.

‘The impact that illegal drugs have on our communities cannot be underestimated which is why we will not stop with our efforts to make Cheshire a hostile environment for criminals.

‘I hope this result sends out a strong warning to other offenders that if you come to Cheshire to commit crime, you will be caught and you will be brought to justice.’
