Somewhere to be, Boris? Emotional Carrie Johnson watches departing PM’s final No 10 speech before he drags her out of Downing Street as she tries to kiss advisers goodbye (narrowly avoiding lamp post on way)
An emotional Carrie Johnson has hugged and kissed friends, aides and politicians who lined up in Downing Street to hear Boris’ defiant goodbye to the nation – but appeared to be ‘dragged’ away by her husband as he rushed to see the Queen at Balmoral.
Mrs Johnson held her husband’s hand as he walked out of the world famous black door for the last time as PM before he hailed his own legacy in a farewell speech brought forward an hour because of a storm warning.
Watched by MPs and allies as he spoke on the steps of No10, the outgoing PM put a brave face on his departure saying ‘this is it, folks’.
And his wife was visibly sad to be leaving, lingering to embrace dozens of people clapping the couple as they walked towards their armoured Range Rover carrying their two children Wilf and Romy.
Mr Johnson also shook hands with some of the crowd – which included current and former Cabinet ministers, as well as Jacob Rees-Mogg with one of his sons. But as he tried to get to his car, Carrie was still in the midst of saying her goodbyes.
TV viewers of the historic moment remarked that it looked like Boris appeared to be rushing her along – and almost inadvertently bumped her into some street furniture as he grabbed her hand to hurry her along.
One said: ‘The way Boris dragged Carrie away from Downing Street and through the crowd was so weird and funny. She was a few seconds from becoming one with that lamp post, so glad she swerved it’. Another said that Boris had ‘legged it’ and had ‘dragged Carrie behind him’, comparing him to a cave man.
