Have you also been eating spaghetti wrong and drinking tea incorrectly? Etiquette expert reveals how we should REALLY be consuming British favourites amid fears millions are bungling beans on toast
People across the country have been consuming their favourite meals and drinks the wrong way, according to an etiquette expert.
William Hanson, director of leading UK etiquette training institute English Manner, has taken to Instagram to show Brits how to stir their tea, eat spaghetti and pour their own wine successfully.
Mr Hanson’s latest advice caused a stir online when he and Heinz presented a five-step recipe on how to eat beans on toast in a ‘quintessentially British manner’, which involved storing the tin upside down, shaking it for five seconds before opening, and warming for a specific 64C.
Spaghetti is another favourite in millions of British households, but Mr Hanson insists there is only one way that too should be eaten – ‘more lady, than tramp’.
Italians, he says at the start of a video on his preferred method, never eat spaghetti using a spoon, so this implement should be discarded.
Instead, Mr Hanson guides viewers how to get a neat ball of spaghetti around the fork.
He says: ‘You upturn the fork in your dominant hand and you go into the edge of the spaghetti and against the side of the plate or bowl and turn [the strands around the fork].

‘If you need to ‘go in again’ and turn the strands around the fork some more, then do so.’
Mr Hanson also believes the majority of Brits are enjoying their cups of tea in an incorrect fashion.
In another viral social media clip, the Sexted My Boss podcast host says that many make the ‘rookie mistake’ of putting the teaspoon in the cup of tea and ‘going round and round… creating a whirlpool’.
He explains: ‘One should instead ‘go back and forth with the teaspoon, moving to and fro between the six o’clock and 12 o’clock position.
‘Give the teaspoon a gentle flick above the cup. Don’t bang the spoon on the edge of the cup, please.’
Asked if there is science behind his advice, he said: ‘There is a logic to it, as well as looking more elegant.
‘If you have added a sugar lump, the back-and-forth motion moves the lump and dissolves it quicker than a circular motion, keeping the poor lump at the bottom of the cup, with the hot drink swirling around it.
‘Also, if the cup is fuller, the back-and-forth motion means the liquid doesn’t splash, whereas a round-and-round motion makes it slop everywhere.’

Fans of the classic dish were left shocked after Heinz revealed the recipe for making the perfect beans on toast
When eating a burger, Mr Hanson says you should not pick up the item and eat it with your hands, because ‘nobody can fit something that size in their mouth’.

Instead, the good manners guru says you should deconstruct the burger using a knife and fork.
Mr Hanson says: ‘Now unless you are in the circus, nobody can fit something this size in their mouth.
‘So don’t pick up the burger and eat it with your hands when it is this thick.
‘Instead, you deconstruct the burger, using a knife and fork, take off the top, cut and eat like so.’
It comes after diners were this week controversially told the best way of serving British classic, beans on toast.
This involved storing the Heinz can upside down at around 18c and shake it for five seconds before opening to ensure an ‘even beans to sauce distribution’.
The beans should be warmed on the hob in a stainless steel pan, which Heinz says helps to preserve their ‘iconic taste’
A number of people hit back at Heinz and sent in their own beans on toast recipe
Some online users felt more ingredients should be added to the dish to make it tasty
Who is William Hanson?
- As director of The English Manner – he advises individuals, organisations, and films on correct form and good manners.
- He is also known for appearances on television, radio and most notably his podcast Help I Sexted My Boss, alongside Radio One DJ Jordan North
- The author of three books: The Bluffer’s Guides to Etiquette (2013) and Entertaining (2018) and Protocol To Manage Relationships Today (2020)
The beans should then be warmed on the hob in a stainless steel pan and served at 64c, on top of two slices of toasted white farmhouse loaf bread, with unsalted butter spread evenly up to the crust.
Mr Hanson advised: ‘Don’t drown your toast with beans. This is not your local lido.’
The recipe released on social media soon blew the mind of many beans on toast fans with the choice of butter, in particular, causing controversy among the hundreds of comments.
Heinz declared online: ‘There are two types of people in the world – those who add butter to their beans on toast and those who don’t.’
Mr Hanson added: ‘A good butter, unsalted of course because we’re not heathens, will ensure it keeps its crisp crunch.’
It has since sparked a fierce debate on social media, with people clashing over the perfect way to serve one of the nation’s favourite meals.
Issues Brits found with the recipe ranged from the placing of the beans on top of the bread, to the exclusion of certain ingredients and general dissatisfaction towards the meal.
One user posted his own guide in response, which read: ‘1. Toast two slices of white farmhouse bread. 2. Store can upside down and shake before opening. 3. Warm Beanz on the hob – NEVER BOIL. 4. Add Lea & Perrins or Tobasco for heat. 4. Butter toast. 5. Pour Beanz on top. 6. Add mature cheddar. (Not optional)’
Another said: ‘Need to add some onions, black pepper, tiny bit of medium curry powder and all purpose and a splash of soy sauce, then you’ve got some hand changing beanz.’
