I fell through my rotten stairs while carrying my baby… I complained to my landlord but they said it was tough luck | The Sun

A MUM fell through the rotten stairs at her home while carrying her five-week-old baby but when she complained to her landlord they said it was tough luck.

The mother of three says she had to go to hospital to be checked over as she had given birth to her baby by Caesarean and was worried about internal damage due to the fall.

Rianna Godwin, 24, from Tredworth, Gloucestershire, moved into her home which is a Gloucester City Homes build, in November 2021.

She says she reported the issues with broken stairs and many uneven steps a month after she moved in.

However Miss Godwin says it was not until June this year the report had been looked into, meaning she and her family have been precariously navigating the unsafe stairs.

Miss Godwin said: “I reported the problem with the stairs being really weak a month after I moved in as my partner had fallen through one of the stairs. I called Gloucester City Homes in December 2021 but no one got back to me about it till June 2022.

“Walking up and down the stairs is really worrying. My five-year-old son has fallen down the stairs because they are uneven and steep.

“When I walk up the stairs, I have to use the wall to lean on to walk up them. Because of how uneven they are.”

A contractor visited Miss Godwin’s home on October 3 and fixed plywood to the floor in a bid to make the stairs safer.

However she says as soon as she walked up the stairs the plywood started to crack.

Miss Godwin said: "The contractor had been out and put plywood on the stairs. When we stepped on it the plywood cracked because it was so weak.

“After the work had been done, I was walking up the stairs with my then five-week-old daughter. I was on the fifth stair up and I fell through the stairs.

“The baby was okay thankfully, but I had her by emergency Caesarean section and I had to go to hospital to check I had not hurt my tummy. I was lucky I was okay though.

“Gloucester City Homes said they would send an inspector out on October 13, but nobody came. I called and asked why and they told me there was no access to the property.

“I was in all day and did not hear anyone at the door. Then I was basically told it was tough, and I will have to wait for another appointment.

“The stairs are a worry for me with the family having to go up and down them when they are uneven, and unsafe. I wonder if they have done this to anyone else and why they think having stairs like this is okay.”

The landlord has arranged for an inspector to now go and visit the home and assess what work needs to be done.

Steve Williams of Gloucester City Homes said: "A visit is already arranged for November 3 where we hope to inspect and identify the necessary repairs to Miss Godwin’s staircase following our contractors work that took place on October 5.
