I live in a HAUNTED old bank – I found incredible hidden treasures in vaults and the boardroom is my bedroom | The Sun

A WOMAN who bought a haunted bank she used to work in and converted into a house would end up finding some incredible hidden treasures along the way.

Cathy Calhoun famously bought The National Bank of Spring City in Spring City, Pennsylvania after hearing it was closing down.

Not only was it the place of her first job as a bank teller in 1972, but it was also where the largest bank robbery on the east coast took place.

But little did she know, it would eventually become her future home after spending ten years working there.

When Cathy learned in 1989 that the bank was closing and up for sale, she decided she would purchase the property.

Cathy knew it would be a challenge to renovate the bank – built in 1872 – but was prepared to use her knowledge of the building to devise a plan.

She paid $52,000 (£41,693) for it almost 35 years ago and has completely transformed it since.

One minor inconvenience after the purchase, however, was people not realising the bank was no longer open for business.

People would knock on her door and inquire about banking services, to which Cathy would jokingly tell them: "deposits only.”

With the building came a whopping 5,200 square-foot of living space, with Cathy converting some of it into three bedrooms and three baths.

One of the main vaults in the building has been converted into a bar, which looks super impressive.

Having removed a wall of safety deposit boxes to free up more space for seating, the cool upstairs bar now looks like a well-respected establishment.

However, Cathy did decided to leave the other wall intact, meaning some of the bank's original interior remains.

Of the safety deposit boxes she removed, Cathy was able to open all but 222 without keys.

Inside the one's she opened, there were old banknotes, old bills and coins, as well as stock certifictaes.

These are now left on display within the bar as memorabilia and give it a real rustic feel.

According to CNN Money, it wasn't the only vault to be converted.

The downstairs vault, which had no ventilation, became a steam room, and still has its original door.

Meanwhile, the clipping room of the bank, where individuals would clip coupons from their bonds, became a powder room.

Cathy removed the dropped ceiling and restored the lobby’s incredible 40-foot height, while the original coffers and skylight were repaired to give the place more natural and warm lighting.

On top of that, she hired a painter to replicate the beautiful and colourful Pennsylvanian sky at sunset on its ceiling.

Finally, the old boardroom is now Cathy's close quarters.

She managed to transform it into an exquisite boudoir with a bed, fireplace, wide-screen TV, jacuzzi and bathroom.

There was also a well-received addition to the exterior of the house.

When Cathy originally moved into the bank, many of its antique fixtures were kept – including the original Seth Thomas street clock.

This now sits back in its original place at the front of the building, much to the delighted of town locals who could reminisce looking at it to know the time of day many years prior.

Cathy also put new lettering outside her house, labelling the building Calhoun Federal.

Although the former bank teller moved in alone, there were rumours that someone – or something – was already occupying the building.

In 1921, a robbery of the bank left one man dead after he suffocated in the original vault of the basement.

One of the directors, who was taken hostage, had asthma and had an asthma attack.

Since then, some people have claimed that his ghost wanders the stairs, having experienced it with their own eyes.

But Calhoun has taken it in good spirit, saying that if he is there, he is very friendly.
