I spent £7K on Love Island boob job after shedding 8st – but nothing could have prepared me for how badly it went wrong | The Sun

GROGGY and aching, Jen Atkin knew something wasn’t right when she woke up after going under the knife.

The 30-year-old admin assistant, from Grimsby, Lincs, had splashed out £7,000 on a boob job inspired by her favourite show, Love Island.

Watching the sexy singletons parade around the villa in their bikinis had already spurred her on to shed half her body weight, going from a size 22 to a size 10.

Having been left with “floppy” boobs after losing an impressive 8st, Jen booked herself a breast uplift and implants at a clinic in Manchester.

But as the anaesthetic wore off, Jen quickly realised her quest for the perfect chest had gone horribly awry.

Two days later she realised to her horror that one of her breasts had “exploded”, leaving her in agony.

She tells The Sun: “My left boob had suffered a hematoma, which can happen up to 72 hours after surgery.

“Blood pooled in my breast and burst when the pressure built up. My perfect Love Island boobs had exploded like a volcano.

“I wanted to feel sexy and sassy like the girls on the show, but it’s taken me almost four years for the surgery scars to settle and heal and my body to recover.”

Experts have suggested Love Island is influencing a new generation of women to consider cosmetic procedures to alter their bodies and tweak their appearance.

This year bombshell Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu admitted she underwent a breast augmentation and spent £4,000 on veneers in Turkey ahead of her stint in the villa.

In 2018, beauty company Cosmetify found more than three quarters of women (80 per cent) admitted to changing their look after watching that year’s season.

And research by Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors showed a spike in searches for boob jobs and teeth whitening around the start of the latest series.

Transformation

A self-confessed superfan from the moment the ITV2 reality show launched in 2014, Jen – who tipped the scales at 18st – decided to overhaul her lifestyle to get a villa-ready body.

She says: “I’d spent my twenties overweight, overlooked and miserable.

“When I saw the confidence of the Love Island girls in their sexy bikinis I decided to use them partly as my inspiration.

“In January 2016 I overhauled my diet and hit the gym. Within months I’d lost half my body weight and was down to 10st.

“But after my weight loss I was left with granny t**s.

“I spent hours re-watching Love Island and picked the girls from the show who I thought had perfect boobs. I took pictures and booked myself into a clinic in Manchester.”

Jen used £5,000 of savings and put an additional £2,000 on her credit card for the surgery in March 2017 to boost her 34C breasts to a 34E.

She wasn’t worried about the operation, admitting: “I knew so many women who’d had boob jobs, they seemed as common as having your appendix out.”

Bloody mess

But the day after, Jen says the skin across her chest felt uncomfortably tight – and two days later she woke up to find her bandages and bed sheets covered in blood.

She recalls: “I was rushed to hospital and the emergency room team mopped up the blood and glued the tear.

“I was given antibiotics but was told I’d need another boob job.

“Worse still, not only had the breast exploded, but the implant in my left breast had flipped and fallen out of the muscle socket.

“The entire area was painful and raw. My nipples had been relocated, but the hematoma had caused some stitches to burst so they needed glueing back together.”

Two months later Jen went under the knife again to repair the damage.

But the trauma didn’t stop there – Jen claims her stitches burst and she ended up with two holes underneath her boobs, which became infected and oozed pus.

Love Island stars talk about quick trips abroad to have tweaks and surgery – they make it look so easy. For me it was a horror show

She says: “I wanted to feel sexy and sassy like the girls on Love Island, and thought I’d be laughing in a bikini six weeks after my surgery.

“But it’s taken me almost four years for the scars to settle and heal and my body to feel recovered.

“Instead of newfound confidence, I was left feeling even more self-conscious about my boobs.”

Looking back, Jen admits she wishes she’d done more research and spoken to more surgeons before going under the knife.

“Love Island stars talk about quick trips abroad to have tweaks and surgery – they make it look so easy. For me it was a horror show,” she says.

“The pain I went through to get my dream boobs was too much.

“My plan now is to exercise my way to the Love Island body shape. I want women thinking of having surgery to understand the risks and research the best option for them.”
