Inmates celebrate as popular breakfast dish returns to prison menu after being axed in favour of continental spread | The Sun

PRISONERS are celebrating after bacon and eggs were put back on the menu at a jail famed for its fry-ups.

Inmates at HMP North Sea Camp, a 300-capacity open prison in Lincolnshire, were fuming when the full English was cancelled in 2020.

Sausages, eggs, bacon, mushrooms, fried bread, baked beans and grilled tomatoes – from pigs, chickens and allotments on the 200-acre jail farm – were scrapped due to Covid restrictions.

Instead, for the past two years, inmates at the jail – dubbed North Sea Holiday Camp – have had to make do with a continental spread of crackers, a slice of bread, jam, butter, milk, and a small packet of cereal or porridge.

The change prompted a string of complaints from lags – of which around 150 are serving life sentences – who said they were "missing out" on the brekkie, usually served up seven days-a-week.

A recent report stated the jail was "known" for offering a "full cooked breakfast every day". which inspectors said was "unique within the prison estate" and "very popular" with inmates.

Indeed the food was so good, before the recent changes, that the jail received a score at 86 per cent for "good" or "very good" food by the Prison Service – the highest score ever seen across the prison estate.

The changes, however, meant the fry-ups were replaced with cold morning meals, with just one hot dish served up at midday.

This week, a report by inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), stated that there "were some adverse comments about the packs the prisoners received for breakfast".

It said, however, that the hated brekkie packs had been scrapped and fry-ups put back on the menu, with lags picking up their bacon and eggs from the dining hall in takeaway containers.

The report stated: "The dining hall continues with a takeaway service, with the meals being collected three times a day.

"The cooked breakfast has been resumed."

It added: "The catering facilities at HMP North Sea Camp are of a high standard.

"The kitchen holds a five-star food hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency [and] the food is sampled daily by the Governor."

One prison worker, who recently retired after 15 years, said the cooked brekkies at North Sea Camp were the "envy of all others".

"They are better than anything you get either inside or outside prison," he added.

"Everything is organic and grown or raised right there in the prison gardens.
