Home and dry! Man cheats death by seconds after walking out of Spanish laundrette moments before tumble dryer explodes in huge fireball
- The explosion sent a ball of fire into the spot where the man had been stood
- It was caused by a cigarette lighter which had been left inside a trouser pocket
This is the dramatic moment a man cheats death by seconds after walking out of a Spanish laundrette just before one of its tumble driers explodes.
Footage of the extraordinary incident showed he had only closed the door behind him less than ten seconds before the blast.
The explosion sent a ball of fire across the premises into the spot where he had just been standing after bagging up his clean washing.
And it was so strong it smashed all its windows and even ripped the front door off its hinges and caused other damage to the facade. The laundrette, on the ground floor of a three-storey building, is at the entrance to an industrial estate in the Galician city of La Coruna.
Investigators have concluded the blast was caused by the overheating of flammable fuel in a cigarette lighter which had been left inside a trouser pocket.

The footage showed the door of the tumble drier being blown open before the premises turned a bright orange and debris was left on the ground inside and outside the laundrettes in the wake of the blast.
It is understood no one else was inside at the time.
The incident occurred around 8pm on March 14 but the video of the blast has only just been made public.
Reports at the time, before the footage emerged, said police and firefighters were among the emergency responders.
Fire crews are said to have torn down the damaged facade because of a crack in the plaster.
A witness told a local paper the day after the blast: ‘We heard a loud noise but it didn’t sound like an explosion.

‘We didn’t think more of it until about ten minutes later the sirens of fire engines began to sound.
‘I went outside and found the whole corner of the street destroyed.
‘The firefighters tore the front wall outside down because there was a crack in it and felt there was a risk it could collapse.’
